D Ranschau Finds Bison Head at River

The Rock River flood exposed items buried for centuries and Doug Ranschau found an animal skull near the family farm. His family notes it may be a buffalo skull but verification is pending. Mrs. Ranschau compares it to a Sioux City girl’s skull recently pictured in the Journal.

Alvord Group Presents 24-Eh Play July Jubilee

Alvord will stage 24 Eh entertainment July 24 25 and 26 in jubilee tribute to local drama careers begun last August. The production satirizes the Depression era with Rogers portrayed and features chorus and soloist. Written by Mrs Lawrence Schieurs Mrs Robert Hodison and Mrs Marvin RanGohan.

Brenda Hammock Enters Medical Institute in Minnesota

Brenda Kay Hammock daughter of Dr and Mrs L K Yates of Rock Valley has begun studies at the Medical Institute of Minnesota Minneapolis. A 1969 graduate she will complete a four quarter in residence program in Medical Technology plus a six month hospital internship. Mr and Mrs EN Elder Yeosauqua celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 26.

Sioux County 4 H members prepare county demonstration contest entries for Monday July 21 at the Sioux Center City Hall Basement. Guilty verdicts in petty larceny cases and estate actions

Several individuals including William Waideh Herik Adrian Calvin Heerschap and Robert Spear were found guilty of petty larceny with property value over $20 and fined $100 each. Other items cover divorce filings probate of wills guardianship reports estate closures and a civil suit by Motor Co against Clarence Hoffman d/b/a B W Geeds for 370.46.

Lutheran Brotherhood Awards Leadership Grants to RV Graduates

Andy Kaupins and Gregory L. Burma, 1989 Rock Valley High School graduates, were awarded $300 Lutheran Brotherhood Leadership scholarships for study at Wartburg College. The program funds 1989 Lutheran higher education grants across the United States and Canada, supporting students in church and school activities with substantial scholarships and fraternal aid.

Pee Wee’s Win A Pair From Sibley A Team

Rock Valley A beat Sibley 5 0 as Ron Pederson pitched a one hitter with Van Weston allowing three hits and five walks. Leading Rock Valley bats were Ranschau Lange and Pederson while Stanton provided Sibley’s lone hit. Rock Valley B defeated Sibley 4 2 behind Phil Burma’s pitching. Koontla Middle and Delay had hits for Rock Valley. Next game for both on July 15 at home.

Bakker Charged In Lyon County

Bakker 18, charged in Lyon County with two counts of breaking and entering. He allegedly confessed to Sunday night burglaries in Sioux County and South Dakota. Police tracked him after a break in at Herbert Vande Kop farm near Rock Rapids. he was identified, confessed, and jailed before bond was set.

J Van Schepen Earns Bachelor of Divinity in Seminary Degree

John Vanschepen of Ireton recently earned a bachelor of divinity from Calvary Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids Michigan. He studies for a doctorate in mission work with a scholarship to the Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He will depart with wife Wilmina Brewer of Rock Valley for the Netherlands August 12 after serving as a Seaway Chaplain in Montreal Cuba.

Scheffer Bauder Attend Felco Soils School in Fort Dodge

Ken Scheffer and Dwayne Bauder of Farmers Elevator Co. in Rock Valley joined 98 other cooperative employees for Felco Soils School at Felco's Fort Dodge headquarters. The three day program covered soil fertility, weed and insect ID, chemical activity, sprayer calibration, forage and grain seed programs and crop management. Instructors were from Iowa State University and the University of Nebraska along with Felco staff.

Northwest Iowa Aging Program Approved for Six Counties

A new Northwest Iowa Program Development project for the aging in six counties was approved by the Towa Commission on the Aging. The $21,000 budget funds one year of planning and development with headquarters in Sioux City. Cherokee Ida Lyon Plymouth Sioux Woodbury counties participate under the Siouxland Council on the Aging with Joseph J. De Read as president of the sponsoring organization.

The Rock Valley Rockets edged the Central Lyon Wildcats 6 to 5 in a Siouxland Conference game. Dave Kaufman led Rock Valley with three hits while Henry Brinkman and Krull contributed offensively as the Rockets took the lead by the third inning and held on as Dan Kersbergen earned the win.

Nineteen Sioux County Dairymen Earn DHA Production Certificates

Nineteen dairymen from Sioux County received Dairy Herd Improvement Association Production Certificates for herds averaging above the breed average in milk or fat for the period May 1, 1968 to April 20, 1969. Awards are issued jointly by Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa State Dairy Association. The list includes Edgar Vermeer Boyden and several others with milk yields and fat averages. the region’s total DHIA certificates numbered 463 statewide, with 1,590 DHIA herds and 86,407 cows.

Minor Flooding Hits Rock River Again

The Rock River crested at 12.12 feet about two feet over flood stage. The minor flood followed heavy rains in southern Minnesota, according to river observer Art Van de Weerd.

Two break-ins were reported in the area over the past week. A tool box and tools were stolen from South Side Service via window entry last Wednesday.
