A nostalgic reminiscence describes a snow filled afternoon with siblings and two girls enjoying a long ride down a hill. Snow blankets feet and faces as the group laughs and later the girls persuade the men to pause the fun.
A Sierra Leone college fundraiser letter from the Hegg Memorial Hospital Finance Committee notes a total of $200,000 raised toward a $409,000 goal to build a debt free hospital. The donors and committee urge continued outreach and confidence as more gifts are sought.
Hope Haven reports the trading stamp drive raised 800 dollars with 1360 books collected yet failed to meet the goal for supplying vans. The event at First Christian Reformed Church drew 100 delegates from the RCA Youth division planning meeting. Paul Poppen attends as president of the Synod of the West RCA and returns to Pella for classes at Central College.
Solvergl hospital committees report progress on a $400000 building fund with a $300 contribution from Mrs Kimma Kosters of Sierra Leone. A hospital benefit dinner is set for February 14 at Haas Hall, $5 per plate, with proceeds to the fund. Tickets available at Harmelink’s Valley State and other merchants.
Members of the Just-A Mere club met in regular session Monday evening at Haas Hall. Miss Hlaine Ransehau, physical education teacher, brought a few students for registration. Local club members participated alongside Gene Bunch, Mrs Pete Tinuner, and Mrs Alfred Kaupins.
Due to the large following from Western Christian of Hull the basketball game between the Rockets and WC will be played Tuesday night February 1 at the Sioux Center High School gymnasium.
The Just A Mere club started selling tickets for the Ben efit hospital dinner set for Monday February 14. President Harmelink led the drive by visiting local businesspeople including Frank McGillatorney and Adrian Oldenkamp as mayor.
Funeral services are held today for Mr Achterhoff 74 who died January 24 at Sioux Center hospital. Rev Leonard Van Duren officiates burial will follow at local cemetery. He married Johanna Kraayenbrink on March 11 1919 at Sioux Center. He was a WWI veteran and active in church work. Survivors include his widow four daughters two sons and 17 grandchildren.
Sick 2 Henry Van Woudenberg was admitted to Sioux Center hospital Jan 19. Tony De Rey entered Lutherary hospital in Sion City on Wednesday. Jake Van Maanen entered the Veterans hospital at Sioux Falls this week. Neal Vonk entered the Sioux Center hospital Sunday.
The Bee notes the birth of Mark Edward, son of Mrs William D Vis of Rock Valley, born January 17. The announcement honors the family and welcomes the new baby.
The third annual United Appeal campaign begins Monday February 7 and runs six days through Saturday. Solicitors will distribute ballots by home and collect them at week’s end. The drive supports CARE, Red Cross, Iowa Children’s Home, and other local agencies serving health, welfare, and disability needs.
Rock Valley Rockets beat Boyden Hull 93 to 65 in Siouxland Conference to move to 6 2. Ron Kaufman scored 30 points and Kent Puirman added 20. Paul Vanden Brink led Boyden Hull with 17 points, Keele 16. First half 45 24 Rock Valley, three quarters 75 44. Earlier 53 45 over Ployd Valley with Kaufman 26 points.
The Western Chapter of Calvin Christian Reformed Church will sponsor a talent program at the church on Wednesday February 2 at 7 45 in the evening. Sacred instrumental and vocal numbers from area participants will be presented. The public is invited.
At halftime Rock Valley led Floyd Valley 27 to 23. The Rockets trailed in the final score but aim to rebound Friday night in Akron to add another win to their growing streak.
