Sandra De Bruin of Rock Valley High earned the top score on a homemaking knowledge and attitude test conducted December 3 with senior girls. She will receive a Betty Crocker silver charm and her paper is entered with other students' entries.
Word reaches Rock Valley that bids for a proposed new post office building are in and under review in the Pealty Review Branch. Mrs Polly Heng learned this from a letter by Congressman Wiley Mayne who says a decision should come within three weeks. Mayne says Postmaster Paul Beamer will be notified directly when the department decides.
Albert Brummel Aletha Brummel and Edwin D Brummel accompanied by Bob and Gwen of Hull Iowa City traveled to attend Lay Brummel's graduation. Peter Dykstra Helaine Hull Andrew Glenn Brummel Pelia and Lary Brummel were also present. Lary earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy on February 1.
Public Safety Commissioner Jack M. Fulton cites 863 traffic fatalities in Iowa during 1968, with economic losses exceeding 106 million dollars. He notes seat belt use could have prevented one third of deaths and urges belt adoption as routine, alongside safer holiday driving and reduced drinking and driving.
Oscar DeBoer co owner of DeBoer Oil was seriously injured Monday when a tire rim flew off and struck him on head and arm. He was taken to Hegg Memorial Hospital with skull fracture and broken arm then to Sioux Valley Hospital for emergency surgery. Doctors report he is in a coma with swelling and five to seven critical days ahead.

Rock Valley Community School dismissed at 10 a.m. Wednesday and bus service was curtailed Friday. Four inches still on the ground with 4 inches more anticipated. locals fear the Rock River flood may be severe this spring. Road crews are praised for nonstop work to keep traffic near normal while greens at the golf course may receive sandbags if a major thaw comes.
Fireman Apprentice Vernon D. Landegent, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert W. Landegent of Rock Valley, has reported for duty aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga in San Diego California. The ship, Ticonderoga 41, is conducting underway training with the embarked Attack Carrier Wing One in preparation for a fifth deployment off the coast of Views.
DEW of Rock Valley attended a Purina Chow salesmen school in St. Louis the week of January 27. Sessions were at Purina headquarters and at the Graysum Missouri research farm. Company executives presented the latest feeding management for cattle hogs dairy herds and poultry along with health products and disease control.
John Blankespoor of Doon drove a 1986 Ford that rolled over on a county gravel road northeast of Doon at 1 a.m. Friday. He was alone and not seriously injured after crossing a wooden bridge and sliding into a ditch, with the vehicle left on its top. Damage was about $300. Lyon County Sheriff Neal Kroon investigated.
Mount Matty College in Yankton South Dakota announces its Dean's List for the first semester. Forty four students earned GPAs from 3.5 to 4.0, with 4.0 representing straight-A averages in all subjects. Darlene Flanagan, daughter of Mr and Mrs Earl F Flanagan of Rack Valley, is among the honorees.
Rock Valley police report about $1,300 in damages from a two car collision occurred last Thursday at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Bath Street. Cars driven by Mrs. Francis Lyle of Rock Rapids and Lary Kas of Rock Valley clashed when Lyle failed to yield. Lyle’s 1968 Ford sustained about $800 damage, Kas’ 1967 Ford, owned by Trudy Ver Steeg, about $500. No injuries reported. Lyle issued a summons for failure to yield.
A soybean and corn production seminar is planned for Tuesday February 11 in Rock Valley at the Farmers Elevator. Organizers Maurice E Eldridge and Dean Barnes will conduct the program, covering insect control herbicides and production practices. Attendees should contact the Extension Office in Orange City or the Farmers Elevator in Rock Valley for planning details.
The Sioux settlers Home Makers Club will meet Wednesday February 42 at 1 30 p m at the home of Mrs Tony Dewey. A Jesson will be given by Mrs Alfred Clausen.
The First Court of Honor of the year convened January 29 with 42 boys participating. Mark Kersbergen and Joe Groeneweg advanced to Second Class, while Brad Dykstra, Mark Richter, Dusne Middle and Douglas Ranschaul earned Tenderfoot rank. Merit badges were awarded in Swimming Baskewy Electricity Life Beekeeping Music Ready. Old Scout executive Myron Rosebrook led campaign-hat presentations to patrols, and Art Gerriuen announced council budget notes and June camping plans. Taps closed the ceremony.
A $354 check arrived to The Salvation Army from various local zones. Part of the funds will aid the local Service Extension Unit for community needs such as dental and optical services, school lunches, and temporary family assistance. Owen Manning of Hock Valley was in Des Moines January 21 28 attending the 65th annual meeting of the Farmers Grain Dealers Association of Iowa representing Farmers Elevator Company. About 1 060 cooperative managers and directors registered for the two day event. Speakers included Neal Smith Bruce Hendrickson Milford Seegly Argie Hall and FGDA President Milford Seegly. Wives enjoyed a style show and luncheon at Younkers Tea Room and the entertainment show at KRNT Theater featuring Tex Ritter. The FGDA operates regional grain marketing coops with facilities in Des Moines Mason City McGregor Meaker’s Landing East Chicago Midian and other towns. Abstinence shakes the head now clearer Mr and Mrs Al Porter returned January 30 from a two week Mediterranean tour visiting Lebanon Egypt Israel Greece and Rome. Six days were spent in the Holy Land. On the Cairo leg the King of Tanzania and his 22 cabinet members were on the same plane as President Nasser of Egypt who welcomed the plane and no one left until the ceremony ended. The Porters noted this as an interesting highlight.
Matthew Schroeder received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Flows on a Saturday in February. He has served as an assistant to Professor Hu Hung Shu this year and plans advanced training toward an MFA next year. He is the son of Dr and Mrs C J Schroeder of Rock Valley.
