The Valley Manor residents enjoyed a December stretch of school and church events. Seventh and eighth graders from the Christian school performed a program in the dining room on December 16, and the second graders presented a Christmas program in the chapel on December 18. Meat market analyst Futrell notes cattle prices averaged about $1 higher than the year before despite higher beef production and imports. In 1967 prices ranged 23.00 to 26.50 with mid-summer up to 27.50, while 1968 profits benefited from strong consumer demand driven by employment gains personal income and population growth.
An economist notes cattle feeders helped prop up prices and profits by marketing lighter finished cattle. In 1948 10 month steer weights averaged 10 lb lighter than the prior year, and total slaughter weights were 5 lb lighter.
