Rock Valley voters face school bond vote April 28

Last weekend Hawarden and Rock Valley groups competed in a state music contest with Rock Valley placing third. On Wednesday April 28 voters will decide on a proposed 1,200,000 building program for Rock Valley schools at Rock Valley City Hall from noon to 8 p.m. The board urges approval to modernize facilities, expand curriculum, and meet safety needs. Residents are told costs will be about 4.3 cents daily for a 10,000 home and 47 cents per acre yearly for a 300 acre farm, with reductions as district valuation grows.

Summer Rec Board Elects Four New Officers

The Summer Recreation Board meeting on April 18 at VEW Hall drew 22 attendees plus board members. Four new members were elected to two year terms: Jit Westra, Robert Richter, Mrs. Lyle Kersbergen, and Mrs. Willy Jonker. The board plans to elect officers on April 26 and hire staff from written applications.

Scout's Pancake Day Scheduled for May 1

The annual Scout Pancake Day will be held Saturday May 1 in the Old Beards building on Main Street. Serving runs from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. sponsored by the Rock Valley Kiwanis Club with Scouts assisting. Details appear in an advertisement elsewhere.

Grass fire men respond near right of way

The Rock Valley fire department was called to a grass fire last Thursday at 7 15 PM. The blaze, likely sparked by passing rain, was extinguished with no damage along the right of way one mile north and two and a half west of Iawn.

Santema Speaks At Rock Valley Rotary Meeting

Greg Santema son of Mr and Mrs John Santema was the featured speaker at the Rock Valley Rotary Club. He presented slides outlining Camp Sunnyside near Des Moines which he worked at last summer and plans to return to this summer. The camp is funded by Easter Seals and serves crippled children and adults with a special summer program.

Sioux County Historical Society Plans Annual Meeting

Sioux County Historical Society will hold its 2nd annual meeting Friday April 23 at 8 00 p m in Orange City town hall. Members and prospective members invited. Bob Bteckhoff will speak and Bernard Vander Aarde will show slides. Reports on museum progress finance and directors election. Several terms expire with re election possible. Charles Wynia, owner of Wynia Insurance Agency in Rock Valley, is reappointed as volunteer labor representative for the community by the Sioux City Office of the Iowa State Employment Service. He will assist with labor supply and job opportunities, with visits twice monthly to discuss vocational training, the Job Corps, aptitude testing, counseling, and veterans benefits, all without fees.

A conference for 13 northwest Iowa counties will gather at the Biltmore Restaurant in Sioux City on Tuesday April 11 with registration at 9 30 am. Undergraduate Research Participation Award At ISU

Evelyn Van Zanten receives a 10 week Undergraduate Research Participation award at Iowa State University for bacteriology this summer. She will work with Dr Bua Partee on Characteristics of Staphylococcal bacteriophages sponsored by NSF grant. She is daughter of Mrs CAE en Zanten of Rock Valley. The program provides $600 stipend and research course credits. Tuition is paid.

Memorial Fund Established For Inwood Girl Evelyn Halma

Evelyn Halma, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Halma of Inwood, was killed Saturday on Highway 18 while picking up cans with Calvinnettes during an Inwood El wants Club cleanup. She was struck by a car driven by Mrs. John Kruse and died at Hege Memorial Hospital. The incident prompted funeral services and donations to an Evelyn Halma Memorial Fund via the Environmental Action Committee at Iowa State University to aid Inwood environmental efforts.

Cub Scouts win first at district show with booth themes

Cub Scout and Webelos pack 217 earned a first place ribbon at the Scout District Show held at Sioux Center Saddle Club Arena on Saturday April 27. The cub display featured monthly themed crafts while the Webelos showcased bird readers and decoupage pictures they made.

Cardiac Clinic at Cherokee May 18

The State Services for Crippled Children will conduct a cardiac clinic in Cherokee on Tuesday May 18 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church 800 East Dow Drive.
