Wildlife Superintendent Bob Barratt urges farmers to skip spring burn offs. Early nesting sites and habitat are threatened as flames blacken patches, destroy fence components and seed banks, and drive wildlife away.
The district conservationist and staff report 158 referrals for waterways terraces trees lagoons and other items with 950 acres laid out for multiple landowners. Nine soil conservation service assistance agreements were signed for named farmers and farm plans prepared for several others. Commissioners met at the district office on April 19 with listed officials and staff in attendance.
S1 Specialist four Carl Sybesma of Hull earned the Army Commendation Medal while with the Americal Division near Duc Pho Vietnam for meritorious service as an infantryman in Company D 4th Battalion 22nd Tarrantey 198th Infantry Brigade His wife Betty resides in Rock Rapids. S2 Army Private Lyle E Kooima of Rock Valley completed eight weeks of advanced individual training at Fort Lewis Washington gaining instruction in small unit tactics and weapons including the M 16 rifle M 60 machine gun and anti tank weapons.
Local observer John Hoogendoorn reports the area received 0.25 inches of rain on Monday and Tuesday morning. Total weekly accumulation stands at 0.92 inches.

Donna Klein daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Klein was among Morningside College students honored at the Honors Day convocation Friday. She was named a member of LASS the women's honorary organization.
Don Hoffman of Spencer was the featured speaker at the Monday noon Rotary Club meeting. Hoffman spoke on his occupation as an auctioneer and described his career path and experiences.
The Rae Mar Inn will close to the public at 6 p.m. Thursday for the Women's Bowling League banquet. The drive in will remain open as normal.
The John Teunissen Memorial Bowling Tournament honoring Teunissen was held on Wednesday April 21 at Valley Lanes. The top three teams in the men’s league competed for the engraved trophy. In 1968 Kooima Machine Works won, 1970 saw Smith’s Pharmacy win, and this year Farmer’s Lumber claimed the trophy with a 2014 series. Chuck Ranschaul rolled 267 high game and Jim Van Engen 598 high series. John Teunissen of Doon died in a car accident on April 8, 1969. he bowled for Lem’s Salvage of Boon.
Donald M. Hop of Orange City, county savings bonds chairman, reports Sioux County residents have purchased a total of 345 274 092 in Series E and H bonds since the first sale on May 2. Residents still hold 36 percent of all bonds for a cash value of 16 298 889, per Treasury estimates for Iowa counties.

On Saturday May 1 at 8 00 pm a concert of sacred and secular music will be held in the Bayden School Gym featuring the Ambassadors gospel quartet and the Cordmasters barbershop group from Sheldon. Proceeds aid a youth mission trip to Parker Arizona with Rev Lester Haspers. Slides from last year’s trip will be shown and a free will offering will be collected.
Northwest Town Vocational School provides an adult driver education course for 18 and older. Classes may run in any nearby community if three enrollments form the area. Registration is in person at NIVS Sheldon or by mail or phone. The course fee is 325.06 dollars.
The annual Silver Tea will be held May 5 at 2 p.m. at the local hospital with speaker L Boogard of Orange City addressing rest homes. Music by a school group. On Tuesday April 20 friends neighbors and relatives gathered at the Jake De Young farm near Fairview to aid with dicing and plowing. Thirty two laborers covered 95 acres while several women prepared lunch and Community Oil of Rock Valley supplied gas and diesel fuel.
Sally Ann Kosters, a senior at Hock Valley Community High School in Rock Valley, has been admitted to Briar Cliff College. She serves as Student Council vice president and is an All-State Band member active in cheerleading. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hein H Kosiers of Rock Valley.
Toni Rae Ranger acting through her father Teddy Rae Ranger sues Gregory D. Veeeman and Emery Wietho Jr for 750000 damages from an October 21, 1970 automobile accident. Four related Ranger suits seek 152113.67 246182.41 25579.72 and 47514.17. Jacks Feed Store of Ireton sues Darrell Plesger for 179.86. Estate tax, probate actions and a forgery case also appear, along with a jury verdict in a Lyon County suit and assault charges against Beirden Lawrence Morgan and others with trial set for 1972. A promissory note suit by Jacks Feed Store against Cluvatnay Ottmanns seeks 3624.48.
Sandi DeBruin daughter of Mr and Mrs Gert DeBruin was named Miss Business Executive 1971 at the State Phi Beta Lambda Convention in Orange City April 24. She earned a first place certificate and engraved pen set and will represent Iowa at the national convention in June in Miami Beach with a Bahamas cruise included. Sandi is a sophomore at Ellsworth College Town Falls.
Representatives from Rock Valley churches and organizations met at the VFW Hall to elect an executive board for the 35th annual flower show. On April 22 the board met to elect officers with Mrs. Nick Hurst as chair and several co chairs and secretaries named plus committees to plan the event.
Gerald Creaney, slain Brink's armored car guard, was married to Sharon Van Noort. Her grandmother, Jeanene Van Drie, lives in Rock Valley. Creaney's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Bill Van Noort of Pederton.
At the April Harmony Youth Home board meeting contracts were awarded to Fail dog law Plumbing and Heating Dragger City Mechanical for a total of 12 598.00. The new home will sit one mile east and one and a half miles north of Orange City with groundbreaking ceremonies planned in May.
Michael Kienzle of Rock Valley accepted an invitation to join the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Eta Sigma the national scholastic honor society for freshmen. With a 43.5 point average requirement he is a pre medical student and 1970 Iowa City High School graduate who earned freshman year Dean's List honors. His father Dr George Kienzle practiced chemistry in the area from 1958 to 12.
A memorial gift note records a donation of 2.00 in memory of Herman Thiel by Mr and Mrs Theodore Ranschau and others. The brief entry notes the tribute as a memorial gesture and lists donor names.
