Iowa City May 2 An extra freight derailed on the Rock Island near Tiffin seven miles west of Iowa City. The conductor and two passengers in the caboose were injured but not seriously. Injured: Conductor B C Eis of Moline Illinois back sprained and shoulder hurt E C Lawrence of Des Moines head bruised and face cut Albert Godley of Kokomo Indiana head cut back bruised and wrenched.
An explosion at a gunpowder magazine in Canton caused massive destruction. Twenty one bodies recovered, hundreds injured, and fifteen buildings razed. The city hall section collapsed, while the pagoda remained largely intact. In nearby Sha ming a suburb, foreigners were unharmed amid the shock.
Four thousand bricklayers stonemasons and granite cutters idle in Philadelphia due to a union dispute over which craft lays stone after granite cutters prepare it. Ice handlers in Detroit strike for a 47 cent wage raise, disrupting city operations. Albany N Y The senate reconfirmed Otto Kelsey in the office of state superintendent of insurance for one year to a day from his original appointment by Governor Higgins with 24 votes for removal opposed by 27 against. The decision drew applause from the floors and gallery.
Plymouth reports the British steamer Westgate landed survivors from the tank steamer Sil verlip destroyed by a benzine cargo explosion in the Bay of Biscay. The engineer and four firemen were killed and four other crewmen seriously burned. In New Jersey, William Gross his wife and two sons died from illuminating gas inhalation in Jersey City.
Mayor Schunk and H A Schunk & Co faced an injunction as the archbishop and Rev Drs Cady Bergen and Graves pressed anti saloon actions. The Law and Order league filed 116 petitions challenging the mauor law enforcement while business leaders met to condemn the enforcement drive.
Omaha Nebraska May 3 The government will open 30000 acres of land near Billings Montana by lottery or drawing for settlement. Water for irrigation will be available immediately. Exact opening date set for about June 30.
Charles Steedman of New York son of the late Rear Admiral Steedman shot himself at Hotel de L Orient Paris last night. He arrived April 30 with his wife, daughter of a former Rhode Island governor, and their child. They had traveled with Senator and Mrs Aldrich of Rhode Island. Steedman had grown despondent since arriving in Paris.
Constantinople May 3 an imperial trade is issued after representations by the state department through Ambassador Leishman authorizing ministers to take action on American schools and other pending questions with Turkey. Expected to lead to a satisfactory settlement.
LaPorte Indiana May 3 Mrs John Allison wife of a Richland Michigan bank robber who escaped custody plans a new appeal to President Roosevelt after seeking clemency from Michigan Governor Warner The report notes the case parallels a January Missouri pardon and mentions a job offer from Moline Plow Company as a parole or pardon factor
Pittsburg Pennsylvania May reports claim the skating craze disrupts public schools. Teacher Ella Dovey notes students arrive tired after skating before and after classes and recess. She adds teachers also indulge in skating near a rink.
Springfield May 3 National guard circles report Governor Deneen has designated Frank S. Dickson of Roosey to be assistant adjutant general replacing Colonel Ray R. Reece of Springfield who held the post for years. The order may come from Adjutant General Scott at any time. Dickson, currently captain and adjutant of the Fourth Infantry, was a former Illinois congressman until March 4.
A panic swept Sterling's opera house during The Fatal Wedding as two drunken men fell down gallery stairs in the second act. Three women fainted and strong men and police halted a potential stampede.
Silas Field a long time sergeant at arms for Ohio Republican state conventions died today from acute Brights disease. He had served at every state gathering for the past 25 years. In Carthage Illinois Mrs Jerome Jones died yesterday from an overdose of headache tablets.
Rioters in Rawal Pindi Punjab attacked European property during May 3 disturbances. A Hindi mob burned two bungalows looted the post office damaged a garage and vehicles disrupted a power plant and smashed windows. Armed police and a squadron of the 10th Hussars restored order.
The St Louis striking web pressmen returned to work and the Republic and Globe-Democrat published city editions on time. Wages are at issue with main pressmen seeking about double pay from 3.67 to 6 dollars daily and helpers from 2.75 to 4 dollars. Arbitration will settle the questions.
South Omaha packing houses granted an immediate wage increase from 3 to 15 percent for about 8,000 workers. Two hundred strikers at Armour's and Cudahy's plants returned to work as the raise took effect.

He said the Pacific may not stay peaceful and noted the U S lacks ships and supplies to last forty eight hours while other nations have ready-to-deploy merchant ships for war. He warned of a future awful war between two nations over the Pacific and that the conflict will be costly.
General Kuroki and his staff were greeted with a royal, crowded reception as the Japanese and American residents lined the waterfront and streets. The arrival featured daylight fireworks, schoolchildren presenting flowers, and a city tour followed by a grand reception with Governor Mead and local business leaders. Escorts included General Arthur MacArthur and Colonels Chamberlain Winn and Hart.
