Strait between New Foundland and Cape Breton forces service ships to land passengers and freight at this port after ineffectual attempts to pierce the impenetrable barrier. The incident suggests pressure from an oil crowd targeting Corn Products Company amid maritime tension.
A federal suit seeks reorganization of the Corn Products company and a receiver for its Illinois plants. The bill asks to enjoin transfers to the Corn Products Refining company and accuses officers of schemes with Standard Oil affiliates to defraud and render stock worthless. It notes 61 percent of Corn Products stock held by Bedford and associates, labeled as the Defraud Out of Stock.
Washington May 1 Governor Deneen of Illinois and Se were in a conference viewed as politically significant. Reports say he may manage Taft’s campaign in Illinois or become a unity candidate to deliver the delegation at the right moment. Both denied planning political moves, stating statesmanship was their concern.
A Santa Fe passenger train bound for Los Angeles derailed 20 miles south of Raton New Mexico on a Wednesday night when an axle broke under the engine tender. Twelve passengers were injured with one seriously hurt but not fatally. The train carried many Shriners en route to a gathering.

The Dominican congress ratified a treaty with the United States on May 4, altering relations in the western hemisphere. The pact makes the U S a trustee in financial matters and in maintaining order, with anti revolutions measures and customs management. It follows a prior modus vivendi that deposited $2,000,000 in New York and reduced creditor claims leading to a $20,000,000 five percent, fifty year bond issuance.
Chicago May 4 The jury in the trial of Victor R. O Shea charged with the murder of his wife Tsago today reported a disagreement. Seven voted for acquittal and five for guilty. This concludes the third trial O Shea, one having resulted in a verdict of manslaughter reversed by the supreme court on technicality, and the other being a disagreement.
Three large trans Atlantic liners the Ontario Ionian and the Vancouver believed trapped in vast ice fields blocking Cabot Strait off Newfoundland near Halifax Nova Scotia on May 4. Ontario Ionian and Vancouver operated by Allen and Dominion lines face possible imprisonment by sea ice.
