Fifty and more miners were entombed at the Whipple mine in Scarboro after an explosion late yesterday. Forty-one escaped to the air shaft with injuries. one mine boss Isaac Pelter is missing after guiding workers to safety, believed to have died. The Whipple mine lies near the Stuart mine where a SO fatalities occurred earlier. Both are owned by White Oak Fuel.

Freight thwarted attack blocks rail line near Racine

Coal Freight Up as Rates Planned Across All Goods

Shock of Injuries Results in Death
Charles M. Parker died at 1:45 PM in Moline city hospital after being injured while trying to board an eastbound Rock Island merchandise train at East Moline. He was crushed about the abdomen and did not regain consciousness. An inquest was held this afternoon and his Ohio father was notified to travel to take charge of the remains.

Moonlight Party Draws Skaters to Rink Meet
About seventy spectators and skaters gathered for the moonlight skating party at the big rink last evening. The rink was decorated with flags bunting and Japanese lanterns. Grand march led by Mr Tremann and his daughter drew about 200 skaters. The rink will close May 11 with special events each night and a three mile relay featuring a Davenport bicycle pro versus three top skaters.
