A fire at a Collinswood common school in Cleveland suburbs trapped hundreds of children. Descriptions tell of two exits clogged by panicked students and a basement overflow as teachers and factory workers raced to save pupils. Initial tallies list 60 to 146 bodies recovered with many still missing.
Des Moines reports the existing agreement between Iowa coal mine operators and miners expires March 31 and no new deal is likely before then. If unable to reach terms, mining halts in Iowa and about 15 000 men would be laid off.
New York March 4 At the last meeting of the Woman's Peace circle several women denounced President Roosevelt for his support of rifle shooting for boys. They argued the practice dangers provoking war and that schools should teach peace. They criticized boys clubs with church ties teaching military drill and opposed children playing with toy soldiers as fostering a love of war.
Forty county treasurers from across Illinois gathered in Springfield on March 4 to push for a uniform assessment method and to revive the former treasurers organization. B A McCoy of Adams county named temporary president and Jay A Hall of Sangamon county named secretary. permanent officers to be elected.
A 19 year old circus star Mitzel Morok died when friend Antoinette Defframe’s pistol exploded while pouring tea. Morok accused of homicide. Defframe arrested on technical charge. Also reports: Cannon opposed by South Carolina Republicans with delegates pledged to him. Placards in Barcelona torn as king’s visit nears. Southern Pacific telegraph offices cut by 9 hour flaw. MWA law society meets in Kansas City with Rock Island members present.
Edward H Harriman and associates at the Illinois Central meeting ousted Stuyvesant Fish from the board. J Ogden Armour will replace Fish as director once he qualifies as a stockholder. The meeting closed a dramatic, long running railroad fight with Harriman faction asserting control as Harahan votes dominated the count in Chicago.
Pittsburg March 4 The Hartje conspiracy trial ends when Judge McFarland orders acquittal for Hartje Welshons and Hope. Charges are now placed on the county.
The Washoe County grand jury indicted every director, the cashier, and assistant cashier of the defunct State bank in Carson City. Indicted: Cashier Davis, Assistant Cashier Van Delich, Directors Brougher Woodbury Lee Peterson Mapes Bender Livingstone and Meyers, plus President Rickey. Bail set at 10,000 each. Rickey faces 11,000 bond. Warrant issued for bench warrants. evidence cites directors withdrawing personal accounts after Oct. 19 meeting. Mapes heads Washoe County bank at Reno. Bender is its cashier.
Chicago authorities vow to root out anarchist groups after a failed assassination attempt on Chief Shippy. Suspects Yaniatis and Stadlweiser arrested. Rose Stern detained as Laz arus Averbuch’s alleged sweetheart. Mayor Busse orders a sweeping crackdown, with deportations for certain aliens and swift action against public gatherings. Immigration officials to coordinate with police to remove alien anarchists and criminals. Emma Goldman defends anarchism while condemning violence. Giuseppe Alio deemed sane in murder case. Archbishop Farley warned of threats in a letter.
Omaha March 4 the advance guard of the Democratic state convention arrived. Bryan will be central, his ideas guiding the platform ahead of the Denver national convention in July. Leaders say no contests will be held, deeming this convention highly important for the party.

New Orleans March 4 Thousands of children in fanciful costumes formed the largest part of King Rex’s subjects during the last day of Mardi Gras. Hundreds of adults joined parades in humorous outfits. Two allegorical processions two balls and the union of Rex and Camus courts at the French Opera House closed the festivities.
Whiteside County Republicans reject Roosevelt administration while selecting Taft delegates to the state convention. Delegates named include Frank Morgaridge C John George Burch C A Davis William Early E R Bond George Isherwood and H C Besse. In Kentucky the tobacco bill passes the House 66 to 21 and heads to the Senate to police control buyers. In Ohio safe crackers rob Mount Crab bank of 3000 amid escape.
In the Senate, McCumber and Newlands spoke on the currency bill, a Tillman resolution sought AG information on Indian Territory court proceedings involving the Choctaw and Chickasaw, and several minor measures passed before adjournment at 5 p.m. In the House, Lloyd charged railroad postal fraud of 70 million dollars, calling for an investigation into postal weighing, with Wanger promising inquiry as the postoffice bill remained under debate at 5:06 p.m.

Nathan Vidaver special deputy state attorney general was arrested by District Attorney Jerome's detectives for taking five thousand dollars in marked bills from William R. Montgomery former Pamillon Bank president. Vidaver had a key role in the city banking probe and was a candidate for the Court of General Sessions bench.
