Cleveland reports 161 bodies removed from ruins with 129 identified and up to 20 more expected. Investigators probe cause while coroner Burke orders inquiries into the blaze at the Lake View school in Collinwood, with plans for a large public funeral.
Cleveland dispatch reports a devastating fire at a North Collinwood public school in Ohio leaving about 170 children dead and many more injured during morning hours. Officials say panic and crowded hallways worsened the toll as rescuers work through the debris.
Chicago reports no progress linking the attempted assassination of Chief Shippy to an anarchist plot. Police seize a trunk at 76 Johnson Street, believed to be Goldstein’s, containing over 50 Jewish books and newspapers. Chief Shippy’s son, Harry, is said to be improving after a rough night.
Detroit officials report that the common council passed a street railway ordinance setting a 3-cent fare on lines with expired franchises and requiring universal transfers to other company lines. About five miles are affected now out of roughly 180 total miles, with 64 more miles’ franchises due to expire November 14, 1909.
United States Senator Redfield Proctor of Vermont died yesterday after a weeklong illness diagnosed as the grip that developed into pleurisy with pneumonia and heart complications. He was 76, survived by wife, two sons, a daughter, and a daughter in law. Proctor, a Civil War veteran, Vermont governor and longtime secretary of war, was born June 1, 1831, and led marble interests after the war before entering politics.
Montgomery March 5 report from Columbus says Southern railway in Mississippi claims state control not interstate status and has refused to obey the nine hour law. Orders reportedly sent to all station agents and operators to continue previous practice.
Tokio reports the Japanese government will not use force to recover the Tatsuo but may seek mediation from England and America if China delays action.

Proceedings reveal stock transfers from Maine Merchants Coast Airline to a $2,000,000 capital.
St Louis reports that claims of a leprosy cure via Christian Science are supported by a letter from Dr George W Barrett who says he was cured after attending a patient. The letter published in the Christian Science Sentinel in January 1900 describes his prior medical practice in St Louis and Kansas City and details illnesses cured.
Washington charged that the Ways and Means Committee aided gigantic plunder schemes. Hitchcock cited paper and lumber trusts shaping Dingley tariffs, asserting a Western monopoly and a national print paper price rise. He alleged International Paper founders tied to ex- lawmakers, and urged free entry of print paper to break the monopoly. Omaha on March 5 saw more than 1,500 delegates attend the Nebraska state Democratic convention with twelve of sixteen district delegates chosen and four at large to be selected by the afternoon meeting. All delegates will be instructed to back Bryan for president as Bryan’s speech and the platform are awaited. Populist leaders plan to endorse Bryan as well. H. H. Hanks of Nebraska City served as temporary chairman while Bryan and the resolutions committee spent the forenoon in seclusion refining the platform.
Lieutenant Governor Lawrence Y. Sherman surprised friends by marrying Miss Estella Spitler at the bride's mother's home in Montrose Effingham County. The couple will reside in Springfield and travel west on their honeymoon visiting Colorado Springs and El Paso, Texas, returning about May 1.

Washington reports summarize Senate currency debates with Senator Hepburn opposing the Aldrich bill and Senator Hopkins supporting it as Aldrich aims to speak next Wednesday. The Senate adjourned at 5 p.m. The House discussed the post office appropriation amid wide-ranging debate on cotton futures, finance, tariffs, and wood pulp, with adjournment at 4 62 p.m.

The Italian car stopped in Woodbine Iowa seventy miles east of Omaha and Iowa roads are nearly impassable due to mud and thawing ground. The Italian s car then reached Carroll Iowa before heading west. At Chicago the German Protos, last of the field, arrived crippled by a broken transmission. In Bar Harbor Eden voters rejected repealing local anti automobile laws keeping the ban in place.
