The July 2 1863 dawn at Gettysburg opened with reinforcements as Lee and Meade prepared for the decisive clash. Longstreet pressed Sickles, brutal hand to hand fighting followed atop the hill while Ewell attacked Cemetery and Culp’s Hills. Nightfall left union lines intact but with heavy losses on both sides.
