Pasture Spraying Time Boosts Native Grass Capacity
Provincial weed control specialist Jim Lapka says spraying weeds and brush can lift native pasture carrying capacity two to threefold. Using 2 4 D at two pounds per acre when woody growth is leafy costs about two dollars per acre, with one pound per acre re treatment next year. Field sprayers or aircraft can reach rough stony areas, leaving poplar bluffs for shade. Livestock should be moved for a week after spraying to avoid grazing on poisonous weeds that may become attractive briefly.
