The Ukrainian Catholic Youth of Roblin organized a weekend retreat led by Father Meijer with Father Novak of Yorkton. The event included talks on What Is Life and Purpose of Confessions and drew about forty participants including visiting UCY members.
A hundred guests gathered for the Marian Day event at the Grotto with a Living Selyary procession and crowning of Our Lady statue. Reverend Deacon Jerry Sywanyk led Mass, followed by a banquet, St Vlad’s College concert, Ukrainian dancing, queen Lucy Shwaykoski and princesses Roseann Klemetski and Francis Osika, plus a prize drawing and dancing to the Melody Kings.
Mrs. Jim Ready and Mrs. C Brade visited at Winnipeg Rehabilitation Centre. Kenneth B S degree from Brandon College. Out of town guests attended Randell Wark wedding. Seeding delayed by snow and rain across district. Eastern Star sessions in Winnipeg. Ludwig couple settling in Thompson after Calgary wedding. Regional visits include Flin Flon Atikokan Miami guests at Graham Mitchell home.
The May 23 social at the Masonic Hall honored the Fred Eslinger family as this year’s Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Award recipients despite bad weather. Dr. J Layng opened events. poems by Garth Paley and Susan Mickelson. a vocal solo by David Edel. plaque presented by S B Simpson Layng. photos by John Chick. speeches by Dr H H Austman and Peter Nowosad. Zenovia Horbay sung. Jim Bork spoke. lunch by Chamber ladies. closing thanks by John Collins.
Farmers on heavy clay soils face delayed seeding due to rain with rising crop maturity risk. Agronomists set latest sowing dates for wheat oats barley flax rapeseed mustard canary grass and annual fodder cereals, plus recommendations on shallow seeding high phosphate fertilizers and early weed spraying to shorten days to maturity.
Steven Kosinsky of Zelena Manitoba died May 25 1965 at Roblin District Hospital aged 92. Predeceased by wife Pauline in 1958. Survived by brothers, sons, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Born in Austria he lived in Zelena all his life and was active in the community. Funeral at St Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Church Zelena with burial at the parish cemetery. Pallbearers listed.
The Merridale 4H Garden Club met May 17 at Murray and Joan Syke with seventeen members present. A bingo event occurred May 28 in cooperation with the Farmers' Union. Potatoes arrived for the 4H demonstration plot.
Shell River Council met May 5 with Deputy Reeve Edel presiding and three councillors. They amended 1965 ward appropriations, approved accounts totaling 21 161 96, arranged road maintenance contracts, issued a business license, discussed Sunny slope transfer and grant requests, and named members for the Centennial board.
Mr and Mrs Arnold Andres of Roblin Manitoba announce the marriage of their younger daughter to Kenneth Earl Cammidge second son of Mr and Mrs K Cammidge of Saskatoon. The ceremony takes place May 28 at Grace Lutheran Church Hamilton Ontario with Rev H House officiating. The report also notes a May 1 1965 double ring wedding at Knox United Roblin Manitoba.
Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hyrsak announce the birth of daughter Calla Leanne on May 17 at Roblin Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds and 80 ounces at birth.
G L Wilkinson announces the appointment of William S Gallinger as employment representative in Russell Manitoba. His office is above Robinson Stores and he will work through the Brandon National Employment Office focusing on agricultural employment while aiding in other fields as well.
Twenty Collegiate athletes scored 52 points at Russell May 17 with 40 by the boys and 12 by the girls. May 21 results in Gilbert Plains show multiple event placings across Primary to Senior divisions and a 49.6 second relay win. Next week brings zone finals.
The Legion Decoration Day in Dauphin occurred on Sunday May 30 with Roblin participants including Mrs E Ward Mrs L Maguire Mrs N Cockerill Mr and Mrs R Shephard R Jakeman and R Schneider. They then moved to Ste Rose with L Maguire to cheer Roblin Legion Juvenile Baseball team to victory at the tournament.
Roblin Juvenile Baseball team won three games at Ste. Rose on May 30 as part of the season opening tournament. Final scores: Roblin 10 Kelwood 1 with pitcher Ken Bahrey. Roblin 2 Kenasota 1 with Dick Bouvier on the mound. Roblin 6 Ste. Rose 5 with Jack Cook starting and Bahrey relieved.
InterCity Gas Utilities Ltd transfers John Arbuthnott to supervise construction of the Dauphin transmission line and distribution systems in Dauphin Grandview Gilbert Plains Roblin Russell Inglis Binscorth and St Lazare this summer. He is a Texas A and M College petroleum and natural gas engineering graduate and has moved with his wife to Dauphin.
