Manitoba legislature amended the Animal Husbandry Act to require livestock owners to register brands with the Livestock Branch of the agriculture department. The move aims to prevent ownership confusion and brand duplication as cattle herds mix in pastures.
About 600 brands are registered and many more used but unregistered, with courts recognizing only registered brands. Changes approved include positions where brands can be registered, two letters or two numerals or one of each plus a bar or shape, and restricted symbols. Certain letters and combinations such as C D 5 LP PL Q are forbidden and vent markings evolve under lazy positions. The Manitoba government will delay enforcing a law requiring detailed disclosure of all charges in time purchase agreements. Attorney general Sterling Lyon said retailers need a reasonable period to draft compliant contracts. The bill, royal assent on May 1, requires items such as finance charges, insurance, and other costs to be clearly listed, including total charges and the annual percentage rate.
