The River Voyage With War Time Meals And A Boarding House Breakfast

During a homeward river trip from Cairo two boats attracted crews with high and low fares. One ship promised speed and luxury, the other cheaper passage with meals. the crew chose deck passage. The voyage included a Confederate battery attack and an ironclad rescue, with delays from damaged transports and fuelled by prior wartime service. At Mattoon a breakfast ploy turned hungry soldiers into a crowded, well fed scene with biscuits, coffee, ham and butter.

Obituary of John W. Roberts from Roanoke area region

John W. Roberts born near Sparta Ohio in 1834 or 1836 moved with parents to Iowa then Indiana before settling in Roanoke and later Fort Wayne where he died August 31 1921 at 87. He married Margaret Loop in 1860 and had four children eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was a longtime member of local fraternal and church organizations and lived 58 years in the same family circle after his son-in-law’s 1910 death.

Grain report shows corn up but wheat and oats down

The September grain report from the Agriculture Department notes a August corn rise of 154 million bushels to 9.156 billion, nearly matching last year’s record. Wheat declines by three million to 790 million. oats fall about seven million to 1.09 billion. Tobacco rises 59 million pounds to 948 million, mainly in northern states, with minor changes elsewhere.

Roanoke Schools Open With Record Attendance

The Roanoke schools opened with the largest attendance in the history of the institution. There are 175 in the grades and 140 in the high school totalling 315 pupils. The first through sixth grades and seventh to twelfth are listed with varying enrollments.

Rufus Miller of Huntington and Mrs. Charlie Light with Mrs. Archie Smith and Dorothy motored to Michiran ity on Saturday to remain over Labor Day. Mrs. Alice Bunyan, who had been visiting, returned home with them.

Field Meet Shows Scouts Compete Amid Rain

Boy Scouts held a field meet at the school grounds led by Rev C Emery Smith. Cecil Gass won multiple events including running broad jump and 50 yard dash with Chas Heater and Howard Heater placing in various events.
