Roanoke River Flood Threat to Roanoke Rapids and Weldon
Widespread rains push the Roanoke River several feet above flood stage at Weldon and Roanoke Rapids. By Thursday afternoon Roanoke Rapids reported a 20.2 foot rise, rising at about 2 feet per hour with crest expected late tonight or Friday morning. Mills and paper plants moved to upper floors while Red Cross prepared refugee aid if evacuation becomes necessary. The 1940 flood remains a reference point, though officials doubt a repeat of that level.

No Error Found in Halifax County Ice-Pick Murder Case

Pvt Collins Wounded in South France with Italian Rehab
Pvt Claude Thomas Collins, who joined the service August 5 1942 and trained at Camp Hale Colorado, was wounded in Southern France in August. He is now recovering from a wound to his left hip and right knee in a hospital somewhere in Italy. He served seven months in the Aleutians before a 30 day leave with his sister Katie Ruth Collins.
