Telecast, Inc. applies to the Federal Communications Commission for a permit to build and operate a new high frequency FM radio station. The article notes the FM service as interference free with a 15,000 cycle tone.
The Roanoke River slowly returned to normal after a six day overflow that inundated lower Halifax County farmlands and damaged crops. Northam pton County reports extensive crop losses while Roanoke Rapids saw water cover roads to Roanoke Mill No 1 though access via the railroad remained. No deaths. minor livestock losses.
Last Sunday workers from all churches in Roanoke Rapids conducted a religious census as the first step in a united evangelistic drive. Despite fewer workers, the census was a success with many cards returned. The evangelistic classes continue this week with pastors leading personal visitation efforts and inviting Christians to participate. The campaign concludes with preaching services in October 8 to 15 led by visiting ministers to reach nominal Christians on the church fringe.
Ben Lancaster recalls a successful scrap drive collecting 23,700 pounds of paper and rags. He credits city residents and Boy Scouts, announcing weekly pickups in the business district each Wednesday and urging merchants to place scrap outside for hauling.
Telegram from the War Department to Mr and Mrs Luther Simms confirms their son Sgt Chester B Simms 22 of the Third United States Army under General Patton was wounded in action in the European theatre on Sept 11. A Roanoke Rapids High School graduate, he played softball and football there and in the American Legion baseball team. He earned the Expert Infantryman Badge before overseas duty. His wife is Josephine Westbrook of Portsmouth Virginia.
Frank King 72 died Sept 21 at Roanoke Rapids Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held from Williams Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev R L Toppings and Rev B Marshall White Hurst. Interment was in Roanoke Rapids cemetery. Pallbearers were Bruce Camp George Long Sidney Collier Lewis Crews Lloyd White Rufus Britton. Surviving are his widow Dora King, one daughter and six brothers.
Miss Elenora Gralow of St. Paul Minnesota has become tri-county librarian for Halifax Northampton and Hertford counties. She bases headquarters in Roanoke Rapids and plans to purchase a bookmobile for use across the three counties.
A Roanoke Rapids Red Cross Prisoner of War display, chaired by Mrs. Carroll Wilson, profiles seven local men now prisoners. The exhibit, with names and locations, will run first half of next week in Leggett's window and the second half at Virginia Electric & Power Company, detailing their status and messages sent through the Red Cross.
Roanoke Rapids P T A will meet Thursday October 5 at 7 45 p m in the High School Auditorium. The first meeting of the 1944 45 year will focus on electing officers and urges all parents with children in school to attend.
The Roanoke Rapids meeting last Monday abandoned the idea to send Christmas gift boxes to every service member. A spokesman said the time is short and gifts are scarce. Attendees proposed using the funds for a lasting memorial to the fallen and veterans, aligning with postwar planning.
In France Pfc. Herman Spragins notified his mother Mrs. Ida Spragins that he landed safely overseas after being stationed at Camp Carson Colorado before shipment abroad.
The Rosemary Methodist church will observe World Wide Communion Sunday at 11 o clock next Sunday. All members are expected to be present and visitors will be welcome at this service of Christian Fellowship.
Mrs Emma Pulley reports her son Sgt Willie G Pulley is wounded in action in France after entering service March 10 1941 and six months overseas He previously worked for Patterson Mills Company His brother Pvt Clyde W Pulley was also wounded in France on August 8 Both are said to be in an English hospital with Pvt showing normal improvement per War Department message.
Pvt. Joe L. Manning 37, son of Mrs. Rivey Manning of Bailey Nash County, killed September 8 in France per War Department. He entered the Army March 3 1942 trained at Camp Polk La. Last letter dated September 4 sent to his mother received Sept 18. His only sister is Mrs J W Lewis 923 Jackson St Roanoke Rapids. He visited home in March before going overseas.
Community prayer service for October announced to be held at All Saints Episcopal Church each Tuesday night at 7 30. The notice emphasizes regular weekly gatherings for residents seeking collective worship and reflection.
