Pfc. Leater Smith, 35, son of Winnie and the late G W Smith of Belmont, wounded in the South Pacific. He entered service in June 1942, trained at Camp Wheeler, and was sent overseas earlier this year. He was formerly connected with a local service station. His wife is Miss Fannie Belle Stokes of Alabama. The nature of his wound was not disclosed.

Health ban to be lifted next Monday in Halifax County
The county plans to lift the child attendance ban at public places next Monday after an August 25 ordinance to curb infantile paralysis. A single local case was reported last week but no new cases since. schools, churches, and theaters are resuming normal schedules as officials say the epidemic peak has passed. Pvt. R A Williams, son of Mr and Mrs RB A Williams Sr of 134 Hamilton St, has wounds from fighting in France and is hospitalized in England.

Tragic Truck Collision Claims Norfolk Child
Danny Hicks Bledsoe, two, son of Mr and Mrs George S Bledsoe of Norfolk, was fatally struck by a reversing truck near his home last Friday. He died at once and was laid to rest in Cedarwood cemetery after funeral services led by Rev B M White Hurst. The Bledsoes, former Roanoke Rapids residents, include Mrs Bledsoe, daughter of Mr and Mrs B C Hambrick.
