Halifax County Fair begins Monday at 12 noon on the Country Club road between Weldon and Roanoke Rapids. The week features agricultural displays, daily horse races in three heats, Triangle Shows midway thrills, and free acts. organized by Veterans of Roanoke Rapids, Inc. with plans to grow annually.

Fall Fatal To An Aged Roanoke Rapids Woman
Mrs. Charlena H. Hart aged 83 died after a fall at her daughter’s home on Hamilton Street. She suffered a hip injury and died at Roanoke Rapids Hospital. Funeral services were held at Rosemary Baptist Church with interment in Roanoke Rapids cemetery. Surviving: three daughters, one sister, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren. Hart was a longtime Rosemary Baptist member.

Morgan Given Road Term After Assault Charge
Morgan, a white man previously jailed in Roanoke Rapids Recorder’s Court for abandonment and non support with a suspended sentence, was arrested again about midnight Saturday for allegedly assaulting his wife. He had been found guilty last Tuesday and sentenced to the roads for four months.

Roanoke Rapids Sergeant Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross
Staff Sergeant Lester H. Scearce Jr of Roanoke Rapids receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in the Bonin Islands mining mission. A radio operator with the 42nd Bombardment Squadron, he served throughout World War II and later re enlisted at Westover Field Massachusetts. He holds the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, the Asiatic Pacific theater ribbon with three battle stars, the Good Conduct medal and the Victory medal.

Lieut Clarence C Harbour son of Dr and Mrs E D Harbour is home for thirty days after serving since June 1942 He served thirteen months on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific including China Siapan Philippines and Guam He wears the Distinguished Flying Cross with one star the Air Medal the Victory Ribbon the Philippine Liberation Medal with one star the American Campaign and Asiatic Pacific ribbons He will report to Alameda California for further orders.

After a meeting in the Roanoke Rapids High School auditorium fifty six veterans learned a schedule of classes. Welding is delayed due to wiring needs in the machine shop and all enrolled veterans will be mailed their start details. Unenrolled veterans may join at the first class and should contact the superintendent.
