The Roanoke Rapids Jaycees plan to acquire a Coastal Plains League franchise with support from Judge W G Bramham and Arthur H Ehlers of the NAPBL. They aim to form a stock group to fund it, but securing a park is key as Simmons Park owners resist leasing. If not, a secondary site or new plant may be developed for games.

Wake Forest Names Murphrey Lightest Back on Squad

Willis Murphrey of Roanoke Rapids is the lightest man on the Wake Forest football squad at 148 pounds. He is a candidate for tail back or left half and is noted as an excellent passer and elusive runner. The Wake Forest team has made four out of state appearances this season and five in North Carolina.

The Roanoke Rapids Junior Chamber of Commerce initiates a $2,000 fundraiser for the high school athletic association. They will sell 5,000 tickets to the Roanoke Rapids Oxford football game on October 11 with a chance to win a 1946 Ford for one dollar. A halftime drawing will select the winner. no Jaycee member or immediate family is eligible.

Veterans Given Textiles Courses At Roanoke Rapids High

Roanoke Rapids High School partners with the Veterans Administration to offer textiles, machine shop, woodwork, mechanical drawing, commercial and college preparatory courses. VA pays all expenses. subsistence paid for part time veterans. Classes run one hour daily, five days a week, with full or partial subsistence based on hours. Nonveterans pay tuition. Start date not later than September 9.

Early spring the Kiwanis Club with the P T A Association ordered playground equipment and repair parts for city schools. Parts have arrived and been installed while full new units are delayed by factory issues. Schools will receive remaining items: Rosemary School one slide and one bicycle rack. Central School one slide two bicycle racks and a flag pole. Vance Street School six swings four see saws boards and one slide. Clara Hearne School one slide one castle tower one bicycle rack and five see saw boards. John Armstrong Chaloner School two sets of six swings and four see saw boards.

Lee Morgan Faces Abandonment Charge in Roanoke Rapids Court

Lee Morgan, described as an elusive husband, stood before Judge Charles R. Daniels on charges of abandonment and non support of his wife and four children. Testimony showed repeated departures, welfare aid received by the family, and Morgan moving between states before returning to Roanoke Rapids. judgment awaited at press time.

Woman charged with fatal knife slaying of lover in Hodgestown

24 year old Linnie Bell, a Black woman, is jailed in Halifax County after a Monday night incident on a Hodgestown street left Leroy Pope dead. Deputy Brigman said Bell claimed Pope slapped and kicked her before she cut him, then fled to Robersonville and surrendered later that day.
