New staff appear in the Municipal Building as Mrs. Julian Glover replaces Mrs. George Hayes in the Sanitary District office and Miss Dorothy Askew takes over in the City Clerk’s office. Chief Dobbins expects G. D. Wheeler to report as a regular officer while Mrs. Hayes leaves Sept. 15 after resigning for a better position, with immediate relief by Dr. W. E. Murphrey. An extra officer will be used at each end of town over weekends.

Roanoke Rapids City Schools opened Monday anticipating a record high enrollment by month’s end. Today 2,303 white pupils were in school with 12 in high school and 1,491 in the lower grades, while colored schools had not yet reported. The total may exceed 3,000 after new enrollments and regional changes. A state rule requiring six-year-olds by October 1 affects first grade numbers. Last year 7th graders left Rosemary School, and the district prepared for a smooth start after a strenuous preparation period.

Merchants To Better Parkings In Roanoke Rapids
At a Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association meeting members voted to park only in four business blocks along the Avenue and to urge clerks and employees to do the same. A petition will seek buy in from non members. Complaints over scarce spaces spurred the plan as driveways and fire plugs reduce spots. Those using the Ave as open air garages will be addressed by the association.
