Sixteen members of the Red Rose Troop of Girl Scouts joined Captain Lambe and local director Keyserling for a Friday afternoon hike. They trekked along the Roanoke, paused by a stream, cooked food, toasted marshmallows, and sang on the way home, calling it one of the troop’s most successful outings.

Local Arbor Day Observance Becomes Civic Goal
The Woman's Club and Parent-Teacher Associations urge town wide Arbor Day events on November 19 and 20. A short program and tree planting will be staged in front of the Junior-Senior High School with a band, while the Tree Committee led by Mrs. T. W. M. Long offers trees and planting guidance to property owners. Each school grade will plant a tree and the effort aims to develop a more beautiful, progressive town.

Red Cross Seals For North Carolina Sale
The North Carolina Tuberculosis Association announces ten million Christmas seals will be sold this year to fund the fight against tuberculosis. A testimonial game at the polo grounds honored Christy Mathewson, whose battle against the disease inspired public aid and rest, fresh air, and medical care. Proceeds from the sale will support prevention and treatment efforts statewide.

Contracts Set for New Weldon Road
The State Highway Commission awarded contracts for a new hard surfaced road between Roanoke Rapids and Weldon. Construction starts around November first. The road will be a third class penetration macadam. State funds cover costs. a $250,000 bond issue will finance other county roads. A. C. House received the bridges contract.

The Bureau of Tuberculosis of the North Carolina State Board of Health and the North Carolina Tuberculosis Association, led by Dr. L B McBrayer, claim significant life and money savings from active TB control since 1915. They report 2 287 lives saved and at least 17 000 infections prevented, with over 68 million dollars in avoided costs, funded by state appropriations and Christmas Seals over six years.
