School Students Launch War Bond Drive at High School
A joint assembly last Tuesday launched the Sixth War Bond Campaign in the school. The goal is 60 000 dollars, 7 000 more than last year, with 90 percent of pupils buying bonds regularly to earn a Treasury Department flag for one month. Roanoke Rapids Man Believed Killed in Philippine Battle
Wilbur Anderton 37, of Roanoke Rapids and Virginia Electric employee, reported missing in action after serving as a radarman on a destroyer escort in the battle of the Philippines. He attended Roanoke Rapids High School and UNC, married Catherine Jackson, and was among the North Carolinians aboard the USS Samuel B Roberts, which navy reports as lost. Deer entangles in fence as hunter bags 145 pound buck near Roanoke Rapids
Sam Powell of near Roanoke Rapids says he hunts deer by letting them come to him. Early Saturday morning a 145 pound buck became entangled in his stock fence, and Powell shot and killed it, providing venison. He called it the real McCoy.
