Greeley entered January 1940, served in Panama nearly four years, won Good Conduct Medal and Expert Marksman Badge, now thought to be in England.

Briggs Is Found Dead Saturday In Roanoke Rapids
Charlie Briggs a 42 year old local figure was found dead in his car Saturday morning after attending a Rotary Dance the prior night. A coroner’s jury ruled death from natural causes a heart attack or brain hemorrhage, noting no valuables on Briggs and a head abrasion. Funeral services were held at Williams Funeral Home and interment followed in Roanoke Rapids cemetery with listed pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Sugar Stamp 34 becomes valid today for five pounds of sugar and remains valid indefinitely. Existing stamps Nos. 30 through 33 stay valid indefinitely. Stamp 40, issued February 1 for five pounds for home canning, stays valid through February 28, 1945.
City Schools To Launch Sixth War Loan Drive
Superintendent Co. W. Davis announced that junior and senior high schools will start their Sixth War Loan drive next Tuesday. The drive runs from that date through December 15, with the entire high school assembly at 11 o clock Tuesday morning to hear a guest speaker.

Missing Roanoke Rapids Soldier Joseph Waters
Mrs. W. B. Waters reports her son Pvt. Joseph F. Waters 33 missing in action in the European theater since October 4. A Roanoke Mill No. 2 and Halifax Paper Co. employee before enlisting in March 1942, Waters trained at Camp Polk and Fort Benning and sailed from New York. He served in the infantry and was believed to be in Holland when reported missing.

Cars Crash Robertson Held After Sumner Street Collision
Two cars collide at Ninth and Jackson as Joe Robertson of Aurelian Springs faces a $600 bond after a Sunday crash that injured Frank Barrett of Garysburg. Robertson allegedly sped on Jackson, hit Barrett’s westbound car, causing about $9oo in damage to Barrett’s vehicle and a 14 yard shove. A second Jackson street wreck involved Len Cameron and Harvey Saunders with $200 in damage and no injuries. A third crash occurred Wednesday morning.
