Roanoke Rapids Airport Map Work Underway
The Roanoke Rapids Airport Committee has started topographical mapping for the proposed Hali fax County airfield. City commissioners, while supportive, said no funds are available to pay the survey. An engineer has begun surveying. map completion is expected in 10 days to two weeks.

Purple Heart Awarded to Staff Sergeant Deaver Shell
Staff Sergeant Deaver G. Shell son of local residents receives the Purple Heart while recovering from wounds in a French hospital. He joined the service in March 1942 and has been overseas since June. A Guilford College former student, he now serves with address 342546-68 Hospital Plant 4149 APO 63 care Postmaster New York.

Army Man Charlton D Coley Promoted After Wounding
Pfc Charlton D Coley son of Mr and Mrs Sam Coley has been promoted to staff sergeant after being wounded in the Palau Island battle. He was discharged from the hospital and is reported to be doing fine and received the Purple Heart. Before service he worked at Roanoke Mills No 2 and is a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School. His wife Miss Fannie Sasser of Emporia now lives here.

Roanoke Rapids Student Death and City School Closure News
City schools will close for Christmas on December 20 and reopen January 1, 194? after a late start due to an infantile paralysis epidemic. Sergt. Lawrence Wilson Myrick, 22, of Roanoke Rapids, was killed November 14 in a B-24 crash in Italy while serving as an engineer gunner. He had served since 1942 and fought on targets in Austria Italy and Hungary.
