John C. Smith 52 prominent Roanoke Rapids businessman builder and civic official died at Roanoke Rapids Hospital after a brief illness from a stroke He is survived by his wife daughter Mary Ann stepson Carlton Cannon and his mother and sister Funeral services were held at the Roanoke Rapids Presbyterian Church with a large crowd and many businesses closed in his honor He was buried in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery.

Direct Raleigh Bus Proposed via Louisburg and Roanoke Rapids
The Carolina Coach Company of Raleigh asks the North Carolina Utilities Commission to grant a franchise for a new short route from Raleigh through Louisburg Warrenton and Littleton to Roanoke Rapids with three daily round trips. One Raleigh bus would also run to Norfolk Va and then to Weldon Garysburg Jackson Conway and Murfreesboro. Local business interests support the plan as it would shorten travel to the state capital reduce transfer needs and open service to nearby towns.

The Roanoke Rapids Chapter announces the annual Red Cross Roll Call begins Tuesday November 14 with Gordon L. Price as chair and Rank Williams as Roll Call Chairman. The goal is one thousand dollars, matching last year, and workers will be appointed this weekend for the supper meeting at First Baptist Church basement.
