Work started this week on a brick 25 by 80 to 100 foot store at 915 Roanoke Avenue. F. M. Coburn, longtime local shoe and men’s furnishings dealer, will run the business with son Clarence. L. A. Dickens of Roanoke Rapids is the contractor.
Fire of huge proportions burns a lumber yard in South Weldon sending red hot flames across the countryside. Thousands of dollars of oak and gum lumber are destroyed as firefighters and workers rush to prevent spread toward the nearby mill. Incendiary origin suspected.
The Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids hires a new pastor, filling the vacancy created by Reverend Eugene Taylor's resignation. Jessup began his duties November 1, is Indiana native and former pastor of Lafayette Church in Indiana for seventeen years. He has led churches across Arkansas Tennessee Kentucky Florida and Texas. He has held major roles in state and national church life.
George C Green longtime Halifax County attorney was elected president of the North Carolina Bar Association at a Raleigh convention with about 700 members. A new Roanoke Rapids to Welldon route will be built with Tenth Street extending to the city limits and connected to a state highway near Hornertown.
Jack Vincent a University of North Carolina senior and son of Mrs W H Babcock has been elected to Who's Who in the annual college booklet. He was recently named president of the Interdormitory Council succeeding John Singletary of Whiteville who left the university due to illness.
