Halifax County jury convicts Willie Smith in Warrenton murder
A Halifax County jury in War renton found Willie Smith convict of Vernon Powell murder on December 1. Judge R Hunt Parker sentenced him to die in the lethal gas chamber on July 9. Julius Barnett, appointed defense attorney, gave notice of appeal and was allotted 45 days to file. The execution is stayed pending review likely at the September term of the Supreme Court.

City Officer In Hospital Here Is Better Today
W. M. Erwin long time city policeman since 1936 was stricken with a heart attack Tuesday morning and taken to Roanoke Rapids Hospital where his condition improved today. Attending physicians say he is seriously ill but has a good chance for recovery unless unforeseen complications occur. Troy Holloman is covering the night beat during his absence.

Second Lieutenant Ray Rightmyer Commissioned in Marine Corps
Raymond Jones Rightmyer Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Rightmyer of 1023 Roanoke Avenue, recently graduated from the Naval Air Training Center in Corpus Christi and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps Reserve. The former NC State student volunteered for flight training at the Olathe Naval Air Station.

Old Clothes Drive by BPW Club Yields 600 Pounds

Lost toddler found after wandering streets near Jefferson
The three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Stokes, 739 B Jefferson Street, wandered away shortly before noon. Officer Jack Brigman found him at an uptown service station, took him home, and identified him with a tip from a grocery clerk. The mother rushed to the municipal building after hearing police had taken in an unidentified child. The boy often enjoys riding the city bus and this was the longest he had been gone.

Private Edward L. Daniel of Roanoke Rapids, reported missing in action in North Africa on February 14, located this week as a prisoner of the Italian government. War Department notified his wife Mrs. Helen V. Daniel, with details incomplete about his exact camp. Daniel worked at Roanoke Mills No. 2 before enlisting in December 1941. his wife and extended family are listed in Roanoke Rapids and nearby towns.

About 125 Roanoke Rapids housewives attended a free canning instruction at Roanoke Mills cannery with more expected at the Armory. The sessions run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are led by Mrs Myra Scull and Mrs Irene Clark with executives from Roanoke Mills Company and Civil Defense. The program ends Friday with further demonstrations and tips on preserving fruits and vegetables.
