19 Year Old Mother Dies in Virginia Auto Crash
Mrs. Leslie Hunt learns her sister Jai-Etelle Jarman 19 was killed in an automobile crash near Alexandria Virginia around 6 am. Jarman, a 17 year old mother of a two year old, had been staying with the Hunts about a month. Her husband is reportedly in the ring since last fall.

Week Term of Superior Court Opens in Halifax
A two weeks term of Superior Court will convene in Halifax on May 31 with Judge Clawson Williams of Sanford presiding. Few cases are pending, but the most serious involves Elmore Ivey charged with assaulting his wife Ellen by entering a Roanoke Rapids mill and beating her, after which she was treated at Roanoke Rapids Hospital. The couple, Halifax residents for about two years, have two young daughters.

Jarman Memorial Unveiled at VMI Honoring Lemuel Jarman
A memorial tablet for Lemuel McKinnie Long Jarman was unveiled at Virginia Military Institute on May 21 by his classmates. The ceremony featured Bob Mountcastle and Colonel Peyton accepting the tablet, with Norwood Anderson unveiling it. The next day the Jarman Award was given to an outstanding Fourth Class member.

Roanoke Rapids Preventorium Set to Open June 14
The Roanoke Rapids Preventorium, in the old South Rosemary School building, will open Monday June 14 under Miss Gladys Ethridge of the city school faculty. It has operated four years with two five week summer periods serving 35 to 40 children, and plans two four week periods this summer serving 30 children per period. Applications for child participation are to Dr John W Martin, chairman of the Preventorium Committee. Funding comes largely from the Community Chest. Public visits are welcome.

City Stores Start Early Wed Closing In Summer
Roanoke Rapids retailers plan summer hours with regular Wednesday closures at noon and continued all day on Wednesdays through June July and August. Grocers banks and other firms began early closings earlier but full consensus arrives next week. No city mail delivery on Wednesdays and post office windows close. operations continue with mail dispatched and boxes filled as usual.

L G Greer head of Baptist Orphanage of North Carolina will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at Roanoke Rapids High School on Sunday morning. About 125 to 180 seniors are expected to graduate as classes are smaller due to enlistments. Class Day is Tuesday June 1 at 8 pm and Graduation Wednesday June 2 at 8 pm in the school auditorium.
