F C Williams, unopposed in North Ward, captured a near complete majority of ballots. John C Smith, unopposed for 3 year South Ward Commissioner, and Byron Gurley for the unexpired term in South Ward, also received large complimentary votes.
Roanoke Rapids court handed six month sentences on the roads to John Wooten for larceny of a car from S. M. Thompson in Halifax. Willie Lynch faced no true bill after his wife died from burns from a car crash at Roanoke Junction. J F Strickland saw his sentence reduced to six months in jail under sheriff supervision. Paul Lightner received 2 to 3 years in state prison with a mental and physical exam ordered. Clifton Hawkins and Willie West placed on probation for larceny of two local cars.
The ABC stores in Halifax County earned 18 702.43 for the quarter ending March 31, with total county profits since program start at 260 089.29 of which 185 000 in cash supported a bond retirement fund. State sales tax was one third of county tax, at 8 293.20, as three month sales totaled 90 607.40 and 984.34 was reserved for law enforcement. Two Roanoke Rapids men Alligood and Howard Pruden attended the Boy Scout Camp for East Carolina Council in an exclusive field photo.
On a stormy Tuesday 2,510 city voters cast a record tally, electing W. Bernard Allsbrook mayor over eight-year incumbent Jenkins by 310 votes. South Ward supplied 825 for Allsbrook to 213 for Jenkins. North Ward favored Jenkins 887 to 585, but overall Allsbrook won 1,410 to 1,100. Observers credit campaign speeches at Union Hall with boosting turnout amid rain and hail.
