Judge Henry Stevens of Halifax civil Superior Court adjourned Monday’s session due to insufficient cases needing jury action. He announced the court would reopen next Monday at 8:30 AM with remaining cases carried over for disposal, aiming to finish the docket by midweek.
Nellie Mae Watson an 18 year old high school senior from Emporia is in serious condition at Roanoke Rapids hospital after ingesting bi chloride poison. Her mother Mrs Bernice L Sheffield found her Friday evening and rushed her to hospital where doctors said she was not expected to recover.
Erwin Pig Riggan Jr a star shortstop on the Romance softball team was accidentally shot at target practice near Chockoyette Creek. He died about 45 minutes later at Roanoke Rapids hospital after the bullet entered his temple and exited above his left ear. Francis Crouch his friend was present at the scene.
A witness recalls being with Riggan when the accident occurred. He says they were shooting at a tin can with a rifle, he moved to place a can on a stump, and, with his back turned, heard the event. Continued on Page 8, Sec. A.
