County seeks site for new WPA airport near Roanoke Rapids Weldon
G L Bobbitt state WPA operations director Lee Wallace district manager and Earle Parker Halifax County manager met with Roanoke Rapids and Weldon residents Tuesday to survey location options. The old county fairgrounds dropped as a site. needs include 400 acres two runways of 4000 feet no obstructions within a mile. If chosen before July 1 Halifax could receive 300000 to 500000. A temporary committee led by Mayor Jenkins and Weldon’s mayor Maddrey will work with the county board to pursue land. Ike Rochelle offers real estate help to locate a suitable low-priced tract.

Blackout Test Planned in Roanoke Rapids Area
Roanoke Rapids and surrounding area will stage its first blackout test under State Civilian Defense supervision next Tuesday night. W P Medlin of Weldon announces that W F Nufer will oversee the Eastern North Carolina air raid warning system from a Weldon control station. A Civil Air Patrol plane will monitor results from the air. A Norfolk warning signal will be flashed by telephone between 8 and 10 o'clock.

Halifax County Democrats set precinct meetings for May 9 with the county elections board chair Robert C. Josey announcing the State Board of Elections will meet March 21 to appoint county boards and organize for the May 30 Democratic primary. Long Hours Ahead For Ladies Control Center Opens Monday
The municipal building’s control center will operate 24 seven starting Monday at 8 AM. A first volunteer training class for post operation will be held Friday at 7 30 PM. The center will handle telephonic and clerical tasks and filter messages during air raid alarms for civilian defense. Commander Frank Sherry praised the strong response from women volunteers.
