Missing Navy sailor Marvin Scott reported by mother

Mrs Mary Poythress of Northampton County receives word her son Marvin Scott 24 a machinist mate first class in the U S Navy is missing in action. Scott survived the USS Sims sinking in the Coral Sea May 7 last year and fought in four Pacific battles including serving on the Yorktown at Midway.

Roanoke City Grants 26 Garden Plots at Cemetery Lands

The city has allotted 26 gardening spaces on cemetery land acquired about a year ago for war needs. Two additional plots are ready, with more space to be opened if needed. Street superintendent George Justice notes the area is suitable and crews will marque plots as demand continues. The plan, approved at the March city commission meeting, aims to ease food shortages by letting residents grow produce without charge.

Blackout Drill Planned for Norfolk Area Friday Night

A practice blackout and air raid drill will occur Friday night in the Norfolk area including Halifax and Northampton counties and part of Warren County. Signals will be 8 35 p m yellow 8 40 blue 9 00 red 9 10 blue and 9 22 white. Ed Graves says the test trains residents to recognize signals and notes Roanoke Rapids could have avoided the drill if prior rules were followed.

Enfield Over Subscribes Red Cross War Fund

Mrs. I. J. Gillett, chairman, announced Enfield’s Red Cross War Fund Drive surpassed its $2700 quota by 174.17 to total 2874.17 with expectations of surpassing 3000 as twenty canvassers had not yet reported. The prior Pearl Harbor drive under Ivey Watson raised over 2200 beyond its quota.

Red Cross War Fund Drive Nears $10,000 Quota

Indications point to the War Fund Drive of the American Red Cross reaching its $10,000 quota in the city. L. S. Neal, chairman, said progress is very satisfactory with no extra pressure needed. Several mills and plants report they have exceeded targets. full territory reports are pending for next week before being given to treasurer Robert W. Vaughan.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Dance at City Armory Saturday

The Veterans of Foreign Wars will stage a dance at the city Armory this Saturday from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM. A round and square dance format will be featured with a lively evening expected by local members and guests.

Coroner to hear inquest into Dick Weaver death

A coroner's inquest will convene Friday at 4 p.m. in the Municipal Building to investigate the death of Richard Weaver a 60 year old Roanoke textile worker and farmer who died Tuesday at Roanoke Rapids Hospital after being struck by a car driven by Raymond Johnson near the Royal Theatre on Roanoke Avenue. The six member jury was already selected and a family request postponed the inquest until tomorrow after funeral services. Weaver suffered multiple injuries including leg fractures and possible skull fracture and died after telling officers his attempt to cross Roanoke Avenue from between parked cars. He is survived by wife children and grandchildren. The family home was on a farm owned by Mrs. Jim Taylor on the Littleton Highway.

John Buck Taylor Dies After Short Illness

Funeral services for John Buck Taylor 56 of this city were held Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at a local funeral home. Burial followed in Macclesfield Cemetery. Rev. Baker and Rev. Robina of Rocky Mount officiated. He is survived by his wife Irene C. Taylor. A former employee of the area for several years.
