Red Cross War Fund Drive Aims For $10,000 Goal

Rev. Gordon L. Price reports progress as the Red Cross War Fund Drive kicks off in Littleton and surrounding areas. Workers man desks at post offices and public places while plants and businesses join the effort. Final results to be published next week. expected no roll call this year unless an emergency arises.

Civil Court Term Cancelled In Halifax

A two week Civil Court term set to begin March 15 in Halifax has been canceled due to attorney illness a shortage of civil cases and the legislature still in session at the time of the announcement.

Four Roanoke Rapids Girls Report for WAAC Training

A group of four young women from Roanoke Rapids and nearby areas report to the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps Training Center in Daytona Beach Florida for active duty on March 15. The recruits are Lucille D Rauton Armeta Smith Jeanette R Eason and Virginia R McClung.

Warrenton Jail Breaker Nabbed After Night Escape

Willie Smith, a colored man linked to the December robbery of the Jewel Box and the Vernon Powell murder, escaped Warrenton jail by assaulting Deputy Sheriff Roy Shearin with an iron rail. He was recaptured near Norlina and sent to the State Prison in Raleigh for safekeeping. Smith had been arrested in Birmingham, Alabama, and confessed to Powell’s slaying and the jewel store robbery, though officers believe he acted alone in the city robbery. He remained jailed without bail to face Warren Superior Court.

Rumor Hotel Planned Near Southward Business Section

The Herald learns that outside interests are considering a modern 75 room hotel in the city. Site has been selected on the Southward block, with a potential three story building and ground floor dining area. Mrs. J. C. Smith plans to rebuild Hotel Smith after the Dec 21 fire if steel becomes available. she hopes to re erect at war’s end pending her son Corp Carlton Cannon’s return from Camp Lee Virginia.

Blackout Planned in Norfolk District for March 9

BR. L. McMillan state director of civilian defense set a district blackout date of March 9 with public signal times blue at 8 50 p m red at 9 p m blue at 3 10 p m and white at 9. The previous February 25 blackout was deemed a outstanding success by local Civilian Defense officials.

Pre School Clinics Set Four Dates in Halifax County

Halifax County Health Department announces four pre school clinics for children who will be six before October 1. Sessions run March 19 at Vance Street, March 26 at Central, April 9 at Clara Hearne, and April 16 at Rosemary, 9 30 to 11 50 and 1 30 to 4 30. Vaccinations for diphtheria fooid and smallpox will be administered under state law.

City grants land for Victory Gardens at new cemetery site

Over 100 garden plots are offered on land bought for expansion of the city cemetery. The March vote by the City Board of Commissioners allows use of about 9 acres of the T. Lee Whitaker estate for victory gardens with plots roughly 60 by 150 feet. Applications go to City Clerk Mrs. Ruby Wood Mincher.

Roanoke Rapids Red Cross Fund Dance Planned

Roanoke Rapids Auxiliary Police stage a charity event next Saturday at the Armory to benefit the War Fund Drive of the American Red Cross. The program features round and square dancing, bingo and games from 8 30 p m to midnight with a 35 cent admission and no extra door charges.
