H B Speight chairman of Hali fax County Rationing Board No 1 said a limited amount of gasoline would be available for non occupancy fishing on the Roanoke River for the rock fish season but no extra allowances for transport to river banks. Occupational fishermen must prove status at the local board before extra allowances. E tickets cover one gallon per water craft. T B Johnson state OPA director noted pleasure driving ban lifted and fishing trips become possible with water craft coupons unchanged. Willis King of the Department of Conservation and Development expects anglers to greet the change as they realize its implications.
Local chapter officials fear the 1943 War Fund Drive will miss its $10 000 goal as early reports show the drive trailing its target despite some city plants meeting their subgoals. Gordon L Price chairing the drive could not comment before press time while L S Neal notes the need for renewed effort. The campaign began March 8 with canvassing of Roanoke Rapids industries and surrounding areas including Littleton and the district toward the city. The Motion Picture Industry War Activities Committee has finalized plans for a Special Red Cross appeal in theatres during April 1 7 at local venues announced by manager Yle M Wilson.
Otho Lee Smith 72 of Roanoke Rapids died at Roanoke Rapids Hospital at 4 am after a week with appendicitis. Funeral 3:30 pm Friday March 26 at First Baptist Church, Rev Gordon Price officiating, burial in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. Survived by wife Georgeina Wood Smith, two daughters, one son, three grandchildren, two sisters, one brother, and a host of relatives.
Albert Freed Keller Jr. aged 3, son of Mr and Mrs A F Keller of Burlington, drowned when a car driven by his uncle lost control near a bridge after the boy shifted from front to back seat. His mother and an uncle escaped serious injury. The party was returning from Norfolk. funeral services for the child were held in Burlington.
The inquest into the death of Dick Weaver, Roanoke Rapids textile worker and the area’s first auto fatality of the year, was postponed to Friday April 2. Coroner F N Rowe presided with E R Tyler and H E Dobbins. witnesses were questioned privately and jurors not impaneled. Weaver died after being struck by a car driven by Raymond Johnson on March 13.
