Roanoke Rapids city taxis will be required to carry liability and property damage insurance. An ordinance adopted at the Tuesday City Board of Commissioners meeting sets minimum coverages of 4000 and 8000 for liability and 2000 for property damage, effective April 1.
A group from the Department of Agricultural Economics in Washington surveyed Halifax County officials this week to assess how far local farmers can expand soybeans and peanut production for soil benefits. Halifax was one of 28 counties nationwide chosen for crop surveys to represent its region. The team includes R. T. Melvin of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics and others from Farm Management and Rural Welfare.
Roanoke Rapids policemen P. C. Luter and S. M. Thompson along with B. B. Ever announce for Halifax County Sheriff and the single Halifax House of Representatives seat. The May 30 Democratic primary will determine the contenders.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Johnson and daughter Jacqueline were hospitalized in Roanoke Rapids after a Sunday crash near Vaughn Warrenton involving a bus and another car. The family sustained serious injuries though all were expected to recover.
Mrs. Hope Smith of Roanoke Rapids received a Telegram claiming her son Carl Barnes was killed in a car wreck and would be sent home. The message from Burley Ward prompted funeral preparations before investigators proved the telegram was fake.
