First of the Bonus Bonds Arrive Here
The first of the Bonus Bonds arrived in Roanoke Rapids and were distributed in the afternoon mails Monday. About 230 sets have been received with a few stragglers in each new mail. Halifax County veterans expect near a million dollars in bonds plus almost $300,000 in Northampton County. Checks will arrive by mail from Raleigh. Bond amounts range from $50 to $1,500 per veteran, with many cashing in part of their certificates. Do not sign until in the presence of a postal employee.

Shifter Smashes Truck but Driver Escapes Injury
Jack Wood, owner-operator of a ten and a half ton express truck, escaped injury when his vehicle was struck by a Seaboard switch engine and several cars near the old Ball Park Road. The train, returning from Roanoke Mills Co to the junction, hit the rear of the loaded truck as it crossed the tracks toward Rosemary mill village. Wood and a Negro laborer riding on the truck were unhurt and the express load suffered no damage.

Funeral Service Held For J B Smith In Enfield
J B Smith 40 year old World War veteran and filling station operator died Monday at his home in South Rosemary from a brain hemorrhage. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday from the home with Junior Order in charge and Cedarwood Cemetery interment followed. Survivors include wife mother four sisters and three brothers. Pallbearers and flower girls listed.

Hiway Cop Condition Improves After Collision Near Halifax
State Highway Patrolman J. C. Long, injured in a motorcycle crash at Crowell's Crossroads on State Highway 125, was said to be improving at Roanoke Rapids Hospital. No bones were broken and he may be discharged in a few days. This is Long's second major accident in Halifax County after a past gunshot injury while pursuing a bootlegger. No Changes In Star Route From Roanoke Rapids
A telegram from Congressman John H. Kerr confirms no change in the Roanoke Rapids to Henrico star route. About 800 rural patrons will keep mail directed to Roanoke Rapids post office rather than Emporia, Virginia. Kerr's efforts preserved the route and secured 100 percent petition support. County and state primary races are set for July 4 with Sheriff and two House seats on the ballot. Thompson defends Sheriff bid and denies plans to appoint Byrd.
