Halifax County Votes Record Turnout in County and State Races

Halifax County produced a record turnout with Dr. T. W. M. Long beating Julian R. Allsbrook by 122 in county races. Kerr won county by 266 over Dickens, Wade Dickens topped Allsbrook for solicitor, and Cooper was reelected coroner. Board of County Commissioners remained unchanged with five incumbents reelected. Roanoke Rapids precincts showed strong totals in the countywide results.

Textile Club To Open Here June 17th For Guests

The Textile Club opens June 11 at the old J. A. Moore house 502 Washington St. The remodeled quarters will host Simmons Company Rosemary Sales Inc New York and Chicago selling agents for local mills. It will welcome mill officials and buyers to view displays and strengthen customer relations to boost orders and steady local employment.

McDonald Sweeps Halifax County In Governor Race

Dr. Ralph McDonald, opponent of the sales tax, swept Halifax County in the primary while trailing Clyde Hoey in the State. Final statewide vote was Hoey versus McDonald in a July fourth runoff after no candidate achieved a majority. In Halifax County McDonald led his three opponents with a landslide showing in Roanoke Rapids across four precincts.
