English Seige of Rhodes Opera Noted as Epoch-Making

In 1656 a production titled The Siege of Rhodes was presented as a representation using perspective scenes and sung recitative music. A Dictionary of National Biography writer called it arguably the most epoch-making play in the language and the freest opera produced in England.
