A coroner's jury rules death of Kaare Strand, a Norwegian pulp mill erector, as death by own action near Weldon. Strand's decomposed body was found along the Roanoke River between two railroad bridges, cremated in Washington, DC, and ashes sent to Oslo. Norwegian consul Captain Anders Williams investigated the case in Weldon.

Mrs. John M. Hargrove aged 68 died Thursday morning June 16 at the home of her daughter Mrs. W King 1003 Henry St. She had been ill for seven months. Funeral Friday at Rosemary Methodist Church with Rev C T Rogers officiating and burial in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. James W. Gray, 73, died Monday at his son Frank Gray’s home after a brief illness. The funeral was led by Rev. E. B. Fisher and burial followed in the family cemetery at Serebell. He is survived by his wife Lula, son Frank, two daughters Mrs. R. E. Gray of Roanoke Rapids and Mrs. C. Powers of Sedley, Va, sister Mrs. Susan Everett of Jarretts, Va, half brother Ken Gray of Suffolk, Va, and seventeen grandchildren with five great grandchildren.

Four Heads On Stalk Cabbage Grown By Local Gardener
R. M. Martin of 307 Henry Street grew a cabbage with four heads on a single stalk. He brought it to the Herald reporting another three headed cabbage, though not as well formed as the four headed specimen.

Prisoner fatally shot while escaping in Jackson
Charles Bowen 28 a white inmate of Hi fax County was killed after leaping from a returning prison truck on Jackson main street. Guard Jim Wheeler fired the fatal shot from about five yards as Bowen tried to escape. Another prisoner escaped at Woodland and remained at large. Bowen, from Halifax County, had been convicted of robbery and was serving a four to six year term.

Rosemary No 2 Weavers meet No 1 Spinners at Ledgerwood Park to decide the Rosemary Softball League title. The Spinners claim the league’s heaviest hitting lineup while the Weavers boast top defense. Doug Worsham plans Ken Guilfoyle as pitcher for the Weavers and either Dick Lee or E Lee for the Spinners. Game time is 3 00 p.m. An Old Timers team will also play the Rosemary Girls softball squad.
