In Halifax Superior Court Jim Sharpe, Mitchell Sharpe and Alonzo Burleson faced charges of kidnapping. Jim Sharpe received fifteen years hard labor, Alonzo Burleson ten years, and Mitchell Sharpe twelve months. Evidence highlighted the brothers’ troubled histories and the defense argued for lighter treatment. Mrs. Mattie Reynolds Dies After Brief Illness in Patterson

Mrs. Mattie L Reynolds of Patterson Town died last Thursday after a brief illness. She was survived by her husband H G Reynolds and three young children. She had lived in Patterson for about a year and was loved by neighbors. Funeral services were conducted by Rev A G Carter of the Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon with interment in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Roanoke Rapids Weldon Road To Start In July

State Highway Commission seeks bids for an eighteen foot hard surfaced road from Roanoke Rapids to Weldon. Work targets July start with funds from county bond issue. Route relocations completed to avoid Chocowotte Creek curves and Seaboard tracks, entering Weldon by the Post Office street.

Much Clothing Given for Armenians

The community’s response to the appeal for clothing for destitute Armenians and Syrians was very gratifying. Two large boxes and a large bag of clothing were shipped from Roanoke Rapids and the clothing donated at Rosemary exceeded the amount given at Roanoke Rapids. The Ministerial Union thanks all who joined in this work.

Mrs. Mattie Hasty Dies in Rosemary At 5 Pm

Mrs. Mattie Hasty of Rosemary died Sunday afternoon at five. She leaves her husband Scott Hasty and twins born Sunday. A Rosemary resident for years, she was known for genial disposition and fine character. Body taken to Swan Quarter for interment Wednesday after gathering with friends and relatives.

Graduation week at local high school features services and prizes

The high school held graduation week events from Sunday service to class day and graduation. Prizes and scholarships were awarded to students including Marion Saunders, Robert Taylor, and Mary Norfleet Grizzard. Diplomas were presented by Dr. C E Brewer.

Members of the Roanoke Rapids High School senior class were entertained by Mrs. W. S. Hancock and Miss Beadie Clark at the Hancock home last Tuesday night from 10 to 12. The venue was decorated in red and white with favors of red and white books illustrating each member's prophecies. The color scheme matched the class colors red and white as guests enjoyed red and white refreshments and music and singing.

Quiet Emporia Wedding Unites Huttleston and Helms

Miss Nora Helms of Emporia and Mr. J H Huttleston of Weldon were married at the Emporia Methodist parsonage Wednesday night in a quiet ceremony attended by local witnesses. Mrs Huttleston is a former Western Union agent beloved in Emporia. Mr Huttleston works in insurance and is known in Weldon and Emporia. They plan to reside in Weldon with friends welcomed to visit.
