Halifax court closes criminal docket for Saturday as grand jury submits report and is discharged. Twenty men travel to roads as local items mark anniversary program.
Halifax County Grand Jury reports poor jail sanitation and calls for immediate reforms. They fault unclean bedding, infrequent washing, unsanitary food handling, and lack of bathing facilities. A state health inspection backs calls for separation of vulnerable prisoners and better overall courthouse maintenance.
Halifax officials summoned eighty five citizens from Rosemary and Roanoke Rapids to testify before a grand jury on a John Doe warrant against about thirty men suspected of selling liquor. Capiases were issued for nineteen. several defendants left town and others bonded. Several trials followed for whiskey selling and related charges amid a busy weekend in the county courthouse.
Son spends time in the home of Mrs. T. W. M. Long while Miss Urquhart has returned from a visit to Jackson.
Mr J A White of Richmond and several others visited Rosemary Monday as residents and guests arrived weekly. The town hosted visitors from Norfolk Richmond and Charlotte while noting sports results and local changes in licenses and laws regarding pool rooms and jitney drivers.
Reno Allsbrook, who forfeited a $1000 bond at Halifax County Superior Court, was arrested in Norfolk and brought back to Roanoke Rapids. He faced a Recorder’s hearing on auto theft. bond set at $2000, with capias outstanding. The town board also denied pool room licenses, praised police work, and restructured jitney and town posts.
Roanoke Rapids residents Mr. J. R. Myrick spent a day in Enfield for business. Mr. Clarence Grimmer traveled as a passenger with Lieut. W. H. Fillmore on a return flight from Roanoke Rapids to Victoria Virginia last Wednesday. Mrs. Grimmer drove to Jarratts Virginia to meet him and bring him home.
The schedule lists All Saints Episcopal with 9 45 Sunday school 11 o clock service and a 8 o clock Sunday night union service at a Chautauqua tent. Presbyterian Church under Pastor Rev Stanley White has Sunday School 10 00 Morning Service 11 00 and evening service 8 00 with Christian Endeavor and prayer meetings through the week.
Peter Smith twenty five former service man and Rosemary Manufacturing employee drowned in the company reservoir on Thursday night. Coroner cites heart failure as cause. He was alone in the reservoir as others exited. no cry was heard and his body was found too late.
Effie Trueblood Brown married Lee Wheeden at the Weldon home of Mr and Mrs Samuel Trueblood. Rev Stanley White presided. The couple left for Baltimore and northern points then to their country home Cedarya.
A colored employee named Dudley Dimery was fatally injured at Halifax Builders Supply Company mill when he contacted a rapidly moving saw. He died hours later at Roanoke Rapids Hospital. The injuries were severe but not instant.
