Tragedy at Weldon Crossing Claims Young Purnell
Jasper Purnell a Mt Olive youth was killed when a jitney driven by Grady Harper crossed a railroad crossing in Weldon and was struck by a passing engine. Purnell leaped from the car and was fatally injured with severe wounds. his mother sister and Harper escaped. Body sent to Mt Olive for burial. Second such accident at this crossing recently.

North Carolina county reports to the State Board of Health for June show 152 typhoid cases, down from 432 last year. Vaccination drives and sanitary privies reduce deaths. 427 deaths in 1919 fell from 439 in 1914, with July-August peak. Public health efforts include free anti-typhoid vaccine via state lab and dispensaries, plus enforcement of sanitary privy laws. Other reportable diseases listed include whooping cough 1,475 measles 681 diphtheria 43 scarlet fever 74 septic sore throat 89 smallpox 248 chickenpox 1,189 typhoid fever 52 meningitis 13 German measles 1 ophthalmia neonatorum 5 trachoma 4 typhus fever 2.

Water Power Surveys Under Way Across North Carolina
The Water Resources Division of the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey conducts statewide water power and supply studies.
