The Roanoke Band will give a concert at the park on Sunday July 18 starting at 4 PM. North Carolina celebrates fourth with grand campus parade
The University of North Carolina hosted a Fourth of July event highlighted by a vibrant parade across Memorial Hall. Students from 35 schools dressed in colors representing Meredith, UNC, Trinity, and others marched under flags and pennants, with Prof Noble presiding. A balloon dance, flag salute, sermon on freedom, and an evening band concert and dance capped the day.

Frank Williams narrowly escapes attack by discharged employee
Frank Williams, superintendent of Roanoke Mills No 2, was nearly fatally cut by Willie Higson after discharging him and his brother. Higson and kin attacked in the mill room. Williams dodged a knife strike while Higson’s knife slashed his ear. The brothers fled and remain at large as a $100 reward is offered by Roanoke Mills Co.

County Health Officers Report Typhoid Prevention Efforts Highlight Monthly
County health officers report a focus on Typhoid fever prevention with 252 letters sent and 14 health articles published. The month saw 182 licensed sanitary toilets built, 16 hookworm specimens examined and two treatments given, 56 quarantine cases listed, and Typhoid and other illnesses tracked with several visits to homes jails and camps. Public health actions include 648 school examination cards received, life examinations, 1555 anti Typhoid vaccine doses and 2 smallpox vaccine doses administered, plus 45 cafe and market inspections.
