Roll of young men from Halifax County to follow the flag to Berlin. Drawing in Washington today to select about 250 Halifax men including 40 from Roanoke Rapids Township. Readers await to learn names and order of selection for the draft amid other news.
Halifax County reads in the Harate and Scotland Neck Commonwealth the fall registration list for the draft. Citizens are urged to verify their numbers, report evaders, and prepare for the War Department lottery to decide national service. About two thirds nationwide may be called, with Halifax County likely 250 to 275 men, Roanoke Rapids Township contributing 40 to 50. The Herald will publish Roanoke Rapids order of liability in the next issue.
The First Christian Sunday School elected officers on the first Sunday in July led by Superintendent A R Baird and Secretary Lucy Taylor. Elders and Deacons for the First Christian Church were chosen on the second Sunday with a slate including J E Speight Buck Taylor J H Gr Clark J W Westbrook Boyd S P Pridgen and others.
The Camp Fire Girls depart Monday for Panacea Springs and return Thursday afternoon. They then travel to Littleton before hiking on to Panacea. Mrs. Mosher, Guardian, and Mr. Mosher will chaperone. The group thanks Mr. S. F. Patterson for the tent he saved for them.

Mrs Alice Harris died at her Jefferson Street home after months of illness. She was an Episcopal Church member. Burial was at Roanoke Rapids Cemetery with services by Rev Lewis N Taylor. She leaves seven children, grandchildren, and many friends. Active pallbearers were M D Collier, Jack Lipscombe, Harvey Waugh, J W Taylor, J R Baird, J W Westbrook.
Roanoke Rapids Post Office announces advertised mail items including Earnest Biggs H. W. Combs June Manning Samuel Powell 2 Bred in the Bone. The notice emphasizes pure unadulterated honesty is bred in the bone not a product of education.
The Chautauqua week closed after stormy weather yet drew the largest crowds in three years. The standalone highlight was The Chimes of Normandy with a full chorus and orchestra. Guarantors reported 53 signatures to renew the contract for five years, securing the event’s return as a permanent community institution.
In a bright Saturday baseball game Patterson Mills beat Roanoke Mills 4 to 0. Pace allowed two hits while Hilton struggled and Patterson Mills scored four runs in the sixth with five hits. Barrett and Patterson each had two hits, a key double play Barrett to Cushing to Lattimore sealed the win. The hometown crowd notes a league shift as Rosemary wy departs to crown a new champion. Sallie King, four, died after short illness, buried at Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. other notes include David Richards and William Johnson fined for drunk and disorderly conduct and Earnest Green joining Roanoke Pharmacy Company.
Ministers and members of Roanoke Rapids Rosemary and Roanoke-Rapids branches disapprove public dances for Red Cross funds. The July 14 1917 Chautauqua tent meeting adopted a resolution prohibiting such dances. Signatories include Mrs W L Lona president and Mrs C W Graham secretary with local ministers endorsing the action.
The State Board of Health states typhoid vaccination is here to stay and greatly reduces illness and deaths where used. It notes compulsory use has nearly eradicated typhoid, with immunity possibly lasting longer than three years. The Army requires revaccination every three years, proving strong protection for soldiers.
Carl Moore of Greenville visits relatives here last week. Willie Grimmer of Tarboro vacationing with his parents. Numerous locals travel to Virginia Beach, Norlina and Atlantic City. Misstatements about a highway incident corrected. Myrick and Barnes cleared of robbery charges.
