Lists the first two hundred men to be called and explains the town's draft quota. If all enlistments count, none will be called in the first draft. The community's quota depends on population with a full target of 40 to 50 men. Notification cards will be mailed this week.
Exemption Board of Halifax county begins examinations on Saturday August 4 for the first draft. The list of the first two hundred men is posted and will be used to establish eligibility, with cards mailed to addresses on registration. Exemption claims must be filed with the Eastern North Carolina District Exemption Board in Wilson. Local business and residents mentioned include C L Ogletree of Rose and Company in town preparing to open a store, and visits by Mr and Mrs Exum Matthews and J B Gee.
The July 20 draft numbers drawing in Washington drew unprecedented public interest, surpassing registration and even the declaration of war. The Herald presents the exact sequence of numbers as drawn, noting that those called at this time likely come from the first 2,000 numbers drawn.

The Weldon community reports 72 volunteers left on Wednesday after a banquet Tuesday at Terminal Hotel. Officials say the quota of first draft volunteers has been exceeded by thirty men and efforts are underway to obtain a ruling from the War Department.
Seventy two Roanoke Rapids men enlisted in U.S. military forces causing a dispute over election of credit for first or second draft quotas. Mayor J T Chase sought guidance from Congressman Claude Kitchen as War Department said credit would apply to second draft if rules not changed. Rotary notes list locals visiting relatives and officials reporting meetings, with county horticulture guidance on Irish potato fertilization and potash sources.
J M Hudson fined five dollars and costs for assault on A L Bain after Bain tried to eject him from Roanoke Mills property. A counter charge was dismissed. L R Carter and Bain dispute over a missing dog, dismissed as misunderstanding. Dan Watson was dismissed for lack of evidence. Various social notes report visits and travels to Wrightsville Beach Norfolk Potsdam Washington and Richmond with church events and local appointments.
The passage argues the county should not credit rival towns for soldiers but instead count all enlistments for the county. It warns 250 percent more men from the community than from Weldon Enfield Scotland Neck and others would cause deep bitterness. The community says it will do its share but resist subsidizing others.
