Halifax County reports total war bond purchases of 3 420 518 75 in the Mighty 7th campaign, with 661 817 75 in E bonds and an overall county surplus of 2 001 513 75 above its quota. County chairman F H Gregory says final tallies may adjust bonds figures as nationwide total nears 26 billion.
Lieut. Jonn Connor Jr., husband of Lois Batts, is discharged under the point system with 154 points and placed on terminal leave. He served in the Mediterranean and European theatres earning the ETO ribbon Purple Heart with oak leaves Air Medal with four oak leaves Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross for 52 combat missions in a B 25 bomber. He plans to join a major Richmond airline HQ.
In France Pfc. Herman Lee Jordan 21 son of Mr and Mrs Johnnie Jordan of 121 Monroe Street fought with the 355th Infantry in Germany and is back in France expecting a leave home. Jordan served two and a half years prior to Roanoke Mills Co and trained at Camp Lee.
Several firms announce location changes and new construction in Roanoke Rapids. The Young Men's Shop will move to the Peggy Ann Dress Shop site at 932 Roanoke Avenue. E W Smith plans a new home in uptown Roanoke Rapids beside Citizens Realty and Insurance. James Stevens and A B Speight begin a building on the Stedman’s Store lot downtown for a modern dry cleaning plant. White’s Ice Cream, Raleigh, will open a modern Roanoke Rapids branch. The New Enfield Rotary Club marked its charter night at the Community House on a Wednesday evening with 175 prominent Rotarians and Rotaryanns from the 189th district in attendance. Registration began at 7 pm and a country ham dinner was served by Enfield Baptist Church ladies. The program, led by Hall S. Orr, featured opening songs and an invocation, remarks by Watson N. Sherrod and Carter Darrow, a solo by Miss Ida Privette, and introductions for Burt Weaver of Spray as the new 189th district head.
Roanoke Firemen's Association met last Tuesday night in the First Baptist Church basement with about 60 members and guests attending a fried chicken supper. The association includes Roanoke Rapids Weldon Enfield Halifax Scotland Neck Whitakers and Rich Square fire departments, totaling about 105 members. Attorney Archie Gay introduced Billy Norwood who delivered the principal address.
Rodwell Crawley of Hollister is appointed deputy sheriff of Halifax County to fill the vacancy caused by the recent death of Deputy J E Porter. The appointment transfers Crawley from prior duties to the county force in the wake of Porter’s passing.
Pvt. Cornelius Everette Davis son of Mr and Mrs J E Davis is on 30 day leave from service. He had been a patient at Lawson General Hospital Atlanta GA since returning to the states. He entered service in 1944 and went overseas in 1945 and was reported missing in action in February. He later was held as a prisoner of war and was liberated by U S forces a few months ago.
Effective July 1st the postal rules govern mailing newspapers to service members overseas. A written request is needed for each new or renewed subscription after July 1st. Preexisting paid subscriptions may continue without a new request. Records of requests and prepaid subscriptions must be kept for postmaster inspection.
The body of 43 year old Quincy Morrison, long time employee at Rosemary Mattress, was recovered from the Illinois River near Chicago last Tuesday. A Cook County inquest found no evidence of foul play, and authorities report no marks of violence on the body identified by social security card and a sister's letter. Morrison, a native of McBee, had served briefly in the Army before working at a Tacoma shipyard. His brother Kenneth was killed by lightning recently, prompting plans for another brother to return home to manage farming interests.
Pvt Rodney Powell veteran of the European theater was wounded in Normandy and captured by Nazis before liberation by the Russians. He returned home on Monroe Street with his Purple Heart, Silver Star, good conduct ribbon and ETO service. Powell entered service August 8 1941 and overseas October 8 1943.
