Heavy rain wind and hail struck Aurelian Springs last Sunday around 2 PM. C L Kelley and Harvey Hawkins report near total tobacco losses and significant cotton damage. Across Bear Swamp Church area Thane Chichester and W J Collins farms sustain roof and structural damage.
Bennie Faucette, 24, a navy veteran and truck driver, died instantly when his 10 wheel trailer crashed head on with a produce van on the Roanoke River bridge at Weldon. Investigators say a left front tire blowout caused loss of control and both rigs burst into flames. eyewitnesses support the tire failure theory.
Seven year old B scunny Brown son of Mr and Mrs John W Brown of Washington Avenue Weldon was accidentally killed Wednesday just before noon while playing with a friend Bill Pierce Jr in the Pierce home. A rifle found in a closet discharged wounding him in the chest and he died minutes later at Dr W G Sutter's. Funeral at 5 this afternoon in the Methodist Church with Rev Dwight Fouts officiating. Survivors include his parents two sisters Ann and Virginia Brown grandmothers Mrs Robert Brown of Roanoke Rapids and Mrs W F Joyner of Garysburg.
A local American Legion post announces a Sunday meeting for its members. Details are unclear due to OCR issues, but activities and guest arrangements are expected to be discussed at the gathering.
Private William E. Holmes, 30, of Roanoke Rapids, returned home on furlough after a wartime ordeal. Captured December 16 1944 near Luxem bourg after missing in action and later liberated by the 33rd division, he endured five months and eight days in a Nazi prison camp weighing 92 pounds on liberation. He earned the Purple Heart, ETO ribbon with three battle stars, Good Conduct Medal, Soldier's Medal and Combat Badge.
Major Kermit Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Mason, is due home soon after landing in New York. A Roanoke Rapids High School graduate, he attended State College and Clemson, served three years, and earned the Bronze Star with the 104th Timberwolf Division. His wife Lillian Lee Armstrong of Portland, Oregon, is visiting the family.
Lt Elmo Faison son of Mr and Mrs M E Faison returns home with an honorable discharge and 96 points after 48 combat missions on a B 24 He earned the Air Medal Oak Leaf Cluster Distinguished Flying Cross Battle Star and China and American Defense ribbons He served in the CBI Theatre and arrived back in February His wife is Annie Mae Shell He previously worked at Lynch’s Jewelry Store and has no definite plans yet for the future.
A lightning strike during an electrical storm destroyed a brooder house at the Roanoke Chicken Ranch on Bolling Road last Friday, killing about 1,450 three week old chicks. The loss, estimated around 1200 dollars, prompted quick response by the fire department, with replacement facilities planned by August 30. Owner J. M. Seaver said the shortage will be felt but is not serious, as 7,000 chickens remain on the premises.
Pfc. Jimmie Orvin Warwick, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Warwick, has been discharged. He entered the Army in December 1942, went overseas in August 1944, and was wounded in October. He wears the Purple Heart and service ribbons for the American Defense, Eastern and Middle Eastern theaters. He served in the Ninth U. S. Army under General Simpson.
Lt. Carlton Bootsie L. Grissom, son of Mrs. Mary E. Grissom of 907 Madison Street, arrived home this week for a 60 day furlough on his mother’s birthday. He served with the Eighth Air Force as a B 17 pilot, completed seven missions, earned the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster, was captured in January 1944, held at Stalag Luft I, liberated by the Russians in May, and returned aboard the SS Charles Goodyear. He will report to Miami Beach after his furlough. Mrs. Grissom called the homecoming the best birthday she’s ever had.
Pfc Joseph W. Norwood of Fort Benning Georgia has returned to duty after spending several days with his parents Mr and Mrs J W Norwood of Gaston. His address is listed as his duty location.
