Eight-Point Program Aims to Reform North Carolina Teacher Education
A North Carolina Education Commission group proposes an eight point plan to modernize teacher education and address a severe teacher shortage. Led by W M Jenkins of Durham County, the proposal calls for professionalization, selective candidates, college readiness, continued education, stronger leadership, improved organization and administration, certification upgrades, and statewide planning. The report warns that recruiting 3,000 qualified white elementary teachers may require hiring from non training schools this fall and stresses that college graduates alone no longer suffice for teaching. It advocates stricter college accreditation, centralized qualification processes, and authentic professional curricula, plus higher salaries and better working conditions to improve campus culture and attract better personnel.
